I was supposed to work 2-10pm last night (Friday is my "short" (7 hour) day). When the crowds all appeared at 9:45pm, I really had no choice but to stay, since I was manning the check in table with one other co-worker (and really, checking in over 600 people, many of whom were clueless as to how this all works... not a job for one person, unless you're TRYING to kill them...especially given that the co-worker is over 65 years old). I left at 12:20am, after shoving my way through hoardes of people to escape. I then dealt with rediculous numbers of cars on the way home, finally got home at about 12:45am, didn't get to bed til after 1:30am because frankly, I needed a shower (600 people plus spotty air conditioning does not equal good body odor), and I was still on edge and hyped up from all the activity and shouting out my spiel 600 times (ok, maybe more like 350...). When I did get to sleep, I dreamt of people yelling at me and giving my spiel another 350 times. In other words... did not sleep well.
And oh, yeah... did I mention I had to be back AT the store at 8am this morning??? Yup. So I got to experience the joy of SERIOUSLY blood shot eyes (more than one co-worker actually asked me if I was ok, cuz my one eye was pretty freaky). So contacts may not have been the best idea... but I just ordered new glasses and they haven't come yet. Bah. Also, we had a gigantic crowd show up this morning. As in like, 100 people waiting at the door at 9am. And lets just say, while we had pretty much the entire staff on premises last night... Saturday morning... not so much. Not good. Also, I got to deal with the drawers, and lets just say, even on the best days at x-mas we don't have those kinda sales (though we did come up just short of our 40,000 plan, which blows). On the good side, today, I don't think we did under 5K in any hour while I was there. And they let me leave 1.5 hours early, which was good, cuz I was literally about to pass out. And oh yeah... somehow I got lucky enough to work again tomorrow... which will be my 6th full day in a row. BAHH!! GRRR!!!
So I got home and laid down to take a nap... and promptly woke up about an hour later to the most unbearably painful leg cramps I have ever experienced in my life. Don't know if it's a heat thing, a stress thing, some sort of imbalance, I'm dying of a blood clot, or what... but I seriously tried to get out of bed to try to "walk it off" and the pain was so immensely awful in *BOTH* of my calves that I was getting dizzy from pain and couldn't even make it from my bed to my dresser. I finally made it over there, shouted out for my dad,cuz I couldn't make it back to the bed, he didn't answer, so i grabbed my cell phone and started calling the house number... which he didn't answer. Bah. Finally he came back in with the dog and heard it and answered and really... he didn't do much, but if i was gonna fall over on the floor and die, it was good to know there'd be someone there. And well.. he did help me get back over to the bed. Finally, after a few minutes, it subsided, but I've continued to have some crampiness in my legs since then, though not to that degree... Not good. So yeah.
My summary: Harry Potter: Stressful & Eye-reddening Angry customers: Usually determined have Harry books at other stores (I called STC and Naperville and Wheaton, for at least 8 customers. Every one of them, after SWEARING they never shop at other stores, it HAD to have been our store, oops, there it is...) Leg cramp: bad Dual leg cramps: VERY bad Days left before I can veg out for a couple days: 1
Somehow I knew you'd have it way worse than we would. Just the fact that your store was featured on the front page of the paper was enough. And I can't recall if you told me, but I figured you'd have a midnight release. (Us? Yeah, right, like the mall would volunteer security, and the company would pay it. I think we were lucky to open at 8, but there were definitely mall walkers at that time. And Sears also was open. I wouldn't doubt that Kohls was, too.)
And we, too, had a couple of people who didn't know where their reservations were. One lady who stopped in was totally cool; she'd forgotten where she'd done it, had already been across the street (where they didn't have her name and they'd already run out of books), and tried here, where we had plenty. Although by the time I left I wondered if we'd have enough for our reservations. Hmm. The second person, my boss got on the phone. She swore she'd reserved it online...with us. Well, it was either online, or it was with us. Not both. And she did not get a letter or a phone call from us, either. Lady--pull your head out of your ass. You did not order it through us. She probably did it through Amazon or something, and after all her freaking out it's going to be delivered to her door. Dumbass.
I hate it when you try to sleep and all you dream of is work. I usually get that at Christmastime. Ugh.
And, with that stupid register, I about tried the Cherry method of fixing it. I asked I. if he remembered her, and he's like, yeah, and I said that one time she literally kicked the register and after that it worked fine. I was seriously about to try that. (This would be in the midst of the huge order and equally huge line.) Then he says, "Have you seen Office Space?" I actually have. So he wanted to Office Space said evil register. One customer, who ended up being in that line twice, offered to bring us a bat. Thanks, dude. :) Oh, and I think we determined that I'm too lightning fast for this register and that was part of the problem. I've gotten really, really good at typing in ISBNs, and since I had to plow through 18 items before even getting to what I had left, I started mowing them down. Mr. Register 102 went, uh, no. Yesterday was a day we really could have used our third register. Stupid store in Albany or Buffalo that needed it. Bah.
I hope you don't have to work too long today, and that you get to sit and rest those legs. Poor thing. *hug* I think of you while I'm having one of Erik's porktastic burgers. Hooray for a barbecue to help me mellow out...for this week, I get to finish off the reservation list and finally, finally start on the Learning Library. It's only been, what, three weeks. Oops.
