Home of the battlin' sexters

May 01, 2014 21:05

This has been a memorable week around here.

Yesterday, I worked late; it was close to 4:30 when I drove through town. On the edge of downtown, in front of the old library, were all these news vans. Like, three on one side, three on the other, from every news outlet in Chicago. Several had their masts up, and I saw two cameras set up on the corner outside the church across the street. What on earth is going on?

I rushed home, but the 4:30 news didn't say anything. However, the very first story of the 5:00 news was a sexting scandal...at my local middle school! Hooray! That's what you always want to hear. Because that's a somewhat busy intersection, it was no surprise when cars started driving by during the live shot; there's a four-way stop right there, and because of how the cameras were, anyone going westbound was going to be on camera. During the live shot, sure enough, there was a silver car that pulled up and I could see a woman inside kind of looking around at what was going on. Heh, I'd probably do the same thing. (Meanwhile, they were on that corner because the old library is now the school district administration building, and there had been a press conference earlier, probably around when I saw all the vans.)

Within five minutes, mom was home, wondering what was going on. We told her, and she said, I think I saw one of the people talking. I went, I think I saw you! Sure enough, that was my mother craning her neck during the live shot. Nice. Well, now we know how my mother got her 15 minutes of fame.

We do have middle schoolers in the neighborhood, but nobody in the immediate vicinity; I hope no one around here is involved.
