Today did not start off the best. I set my TV wake-up timer to 6:30 on the weekends, but neglected to change it back today, so I woke up to my regular alarm. My TV turned on shortly afterward. (My regular alarm goes off about 6:26, though it reads 6:31. My TV clock is set a little fast.) This meant I was slightly late getting up and getting in the shower, but from 7-7:30 most mornings I watch the news, so it's not a big deal. But as I'm getting close to leaving the house, I hear a bunch of sirens. I can't tell where they're going, only that they're somewhere in my town. Goody. Better leave early.
I do leave early, in part because I need to scrape my car--always fun in below-zero weather--but it does give my car a chance to warm up and de-fog. So I get in my car and start the ride to work, only this happens: I get to the stop sign to leave my subdivision, and as usual I'm blinded by the sun so I can barely see. Luckily I do see a car to my right at the stop sign, and they go, so it's my turn. Except the person behind them just goes. Uh, what? Did you not see the stop sign? I mean, I know visibility isn't great this time of day at this time of year, but you're not the one driving into the sun. I am. And I had the right of way. I end up behind this person after honking at them, and just so you know, I totally judge people by how they clean off (or don't clean off) their cars, and this person? Did a really terrible job. Like, they barely scraped anything away from their rear windshield, and probably the same from the front one. Seriously? No wonder you couldn't see me. I'm not sure how you can see anything, really. So we get up to the light, which is green, and we go to turn onto the main roadway. The first thing I notice is this van in the left turn lane in the opposite direction; it's at an angle, like she's waiting to turn as soon as traffic clears. And then the next thing I notice, as I start to turn, is brake lights, and I have to slam mine on, and the anti-lock braking system kicks on and guess what, I'm almost in the idiot's trunk (which, by the way, was open), because the cars on the main road weren't going anywhere. Aha. So this was where the sirens were going. I couldn't see an accident, but up ahead at the next cross street I saw an ambulance in the median, plus a cop in the turn lane to go onto the street I'd just been on. Well. This looks promising. Later I'd find out there was a water main break about a mile down the road. I immediately got into the left turn lane to turn onto that next cross street--somehow there was no traffic--and wound my way around to the street I'd been on and went back south toward my subdivision. Well. If this is how today's going to be, perhaps I should just go home. And I drove past there, but since I'd left early I would still be on time, so I did go in to work, but part of me didn't want to.
With good reason: I sustained a workplace injury. I got bitten by the thick edge of a cardboard box. Biggest paper cut I've received for a while, though really it was more like a scrape. I told my boss I'd need to take the rest of the week off. Alas, he did not agree. Sigh. At least the rest of the day was uneventful, but I could've used a nap. It started off poorly and sleeping it off would have been better--at least I'd have been more bright-eyed and bushy-tailed. Instead I was dull-eyed and matted-tailed. Oh well. There's always tomorrow.
