Government Shutdown

Is it sad that I kind of feel happy about this whole government shutdown shenanigan? As a recent undergraduate with a political science major, I wish I was still in school just to have in-class discussions about this whole ordeal. I've always been the type of person who tries to treat everyone equally, especially when it comes to political beliefs. I don't exactly hide my ideologies; I'm a registered Democrat and have volunteered for the party, but I'm really a socialist. Yes, a socialist. No, not that "dirty" word that America has fooled everyone to believe is the worst thing known to the country. Google it.

Anyway... On to the more important issue at hand: the government shutdown. What this all really comes down to is Obamacare (otherwise known as the Affordable Healthcare Act), which passed in 2010. I think Obamacare isn't perfect, but the United States is one of the few first-world countries that do not provide universal healthcare to its peoples. Okay, I know that Obamacare isn't exactly universal healthcare, but at least there's a piece of legislation that tries to solve the healthcare system in America. I'm not saying it's the best thing ever, but seeing as how controversial the whole healthcare topic has been as of lately, I'm glad that it has enough flaws to attract people's attention.

So yes, I'm kind of happy about the government shutdown. It's a shame that it takes big events to bring awareness to politics. I don't remember another time that so many people have taken to Facebook and Twitter to express their distaste in American government. I think I even smiled just scrolling down my timeline; it warms my heart to see people actually posting statuses and tweeting about politics as opposed to their outfit of the day or how they have so much homework and midterms.

And then it's even better because people posting these opinions have only heard soundbites. They haven't researched the whole story. They don't know that Obamacare and the Affordable Healthcare Act are the same thing. They don't understand that they are the ones who can elect these senators and representatives into office. And then I see someone complaining about jury duty, and it makes me even more furious that there's a government shutdown and someone is whining about having the ability to declare another American citizen as guilty or innocent. Can people be more selfish?

I just wish that people cared more about what's going on in their own country. I think we deserve the government shutdown. Let us realize how politics is something that we should pay attention to and try to actually help one another. It's going to be a slow and long process, but I think one day we'll be a good country again. But by the time that happens, who knows? Maybe I'll just get so tired of all the bullshit in this country and have moved somewhere else. We'll see.
