Returning to long-vanished companions, on the other hand, was previously unheard of (with the exception of those rare "Doctor meets Doctor" events that became a sub-genre in themselves).

Battlefield? Okay, so depending upon your definition of Companion the Brigadier may not count since (afaik) he never travelled in the TARDIS, but thematically it fits.

Nick Courtney was the only person (up until 1996) to have been on the show with all the doctors and I'm actually surprised that RTD hasn't brought the Brig out of retirement again.

Are you sure about The Three Doctors? If I remember rightly, he got zapped from our world to Omega's by the anti-matter beastie, and then travelled back via the singularity-stream-thing. He may well have been in the TARDIS, but I don't think he travelled in it.

ICBW but I thought that the Brig was in the TARDIS when Two switched the forcefield off - I guess it is semantics as to whether you count that as TARDIS travel or not...
