Assorted movie trailers:

Watchmen. The trailer is a strange mix of extremely faithful images, overly stylised slow-mo and slightly unreal visual effects. I think I sorta like it. (EDIT: now working.)

Outlander. A spaceman crashes in an ancient norse village while hunting an alien creature. The Vikings do battle. The Vikings are led by John ( Read more... )

I found a version of the Watchmen trailer on YouTube, though I'm guessing that copies are being taken down almost as soon as they're put up (the first one I tried had already been zapped). It's quite lovely, but then so was V for Vendetta and that was a brainless movie that (I'm told) shared little with the book. I'm also thinking that I should probably reread Watchmen at some point before the film comes out.

I thought V for Vendetta was smarter than your average bear blockbuster. That may be faint praise but I thought it was a long way short of brainless.

I like the Watchmen trailer about as much as I liked the Vendetta trailer, with much the same feeling that anyone not familiar with the original work may be going "so what?" The music is well chosen to give a slightly off-kilter vibe, as is the closing quote. I'm not quite convinced yet - maybe it's the "From the Director of 300" bit.

As a piece of storytelling, V for Vendetta might have been alright, but as a political statement, it was simplistic, verging on naive.

And yes, 'from the director of 300' does not inspire confidence.

Yes, V is simplistic and naive, but at least it has something that it's trying to say, and--remarkably for a mainstream blockbuster--it gives its thematic resolution as much weight as the story resolution.

Outlander does even better in the blurb stakes with "From one of the producers of The Lord of the Rings".

I can't watch the trailer from work but Outlander sounds awesome! Hmm, actually it sounds a lot like Doomsday. Oh dear.

It does look quite awesome, for certain values of awesome that are extremely pulpy, but mercifully it doesn't look at all like Doomsday.
