My son said he wanted to try to make rice balls yesterday.
I had been wanting to try doing the same, so I agreed.
After a WONDERFUL visit to
Nobana (the first time I have gone there), I came back home with lots of supplies.
My son, his girlfriend and I made the supplies into the onigiri assortment you see below. The only thing we didn't make was the seaweed salad (which I can make but it never tastes exactly like the salad you get at the restaurants).
I then spent some time wondering WHY rice balls were called onigiri. Were they "ghost/devil obligations" as in oni-inu? Were they "ghost/devil cuts as in yokogiri or kesagiri?
A Google search revealed that it should be parsed as o-nigiri or "something that is molded with the hands."
I like the parsing that makes it a devil obligation better I think
