I have spent the day online grading my students homework assignments and correcting/commenting on their posts. It has been the latter with which I am most intrigued.
I am consistently surprised at the level of communication that is possible through online discussion forums. I get the feeling of communicating with my students and them with me. At least the interaction feels similar to what I experience in the classroom.
I hope they are learning as well as they appear to be learning.
I have been posting a wide range of possible test questions which they, then, answer . I read over the answers, ask for clarification when necessary and correct when appropriate. The test questions are drawn directly from the forums.
This learning tool appears to help the test scores of those who post answers. Unfortunately , this is a small portion of the class. Most just read others answers and don't appear to gain as much understanding of the material.
I know I need to refine a lot of the questions to better promote active learning.
I wish I knew of some research examining the efficacy of this form of learning or studying for the test.
Ironically, I am more experienced with online learning discussion forums than ones like the one I am posting to right now.
I just assume I will be talking to myself for a while...perhaps a long while. :-P
