Severus hated break, hated being home, but those chances where he got to slip away were heaven, because those moments were stolen away with Lily Evans. Sure, little ever came of it, they’d just talk late into the night and she’d sometimes hug him or he’d hold her, but it was like a brother, never what he wanted and still, still he came home in the same daze he might have otherwise. She’d felt so good and Severus felt icy cold as he’d searched for the key he hid under the porch to get inside again. It must’ve been 3am. He found it, finally, with trembling fingers, and unlocked the front door before hiding it again and slipping inside in silence. It was dark, no one was up, he was sure. He locked up, knowing anything out of place might give his sneaking out away, and he quietly tried to navigate the living room in the poor light that just barely bled through the shades.

He told her he'd wait for him... the sobbing woman that was his wife had been distraught to learn than her son had run off in the middle of the night without a word. Tobias had forced her to go to bed, calmed her somewhat by insisting he'd handle it.. She'd gone reluctantly.. but with a little persuasion the man was effectively alone and awake. Tobias was irritated that he had been made to stay up at wait for the damned kid, he'd have prefered to sleep, but wait up he did, back perched against the post of the hallway wall, eyes trained on that front door for the better part of two hours. He hadn't moved much since he began his watch, he'd only fetched a drink and a smoke, well two or three smokes now. He was just tossing out the ashes on his latest cigarette when the knob turned and slowly opened. His eyes narrowed and he stared hard at the lanky figure slipping inside quiet as can be. "There's no use sneaking you rotten slag," he spat derisively and flicked on the light, blinding himself and his useless son. "By all means, come in whenever you damned well please because none of us in this god damned house have to work in a few hours."

Severus startled, reaching for his wand and drawing it on habit, though this wasn’t Hogwarts. This was home. As his father’s voice scolded him, he tucked it away again, a hand over his eyes while they adjusted. What, had his father passed out on the couch again? “Why are you awake?” he asked, lowering his hand slowly, feeling that annoying strain in his eyes, “If you have to be at work in a few hours, you would’ve done better sleeping in a bed.” He tried not to sound nasty about it, but there little he could ever say that didn’t earn him some sort of attack. “I was out with a girl, I’d have thought you’d approve,” he chanced, folding his arms in front of him and looking at his father. Nothing said he had to say which or why.

"Why am I awake?" he asked incredulously and even managed a short, barking laugh. "I would have been sleeping in a bed just now if that blasted woman in there," he gestured down the hall where his and Eileen's room was located, " wasn't a snivelling heap of a tears because her moronic son," he said each word with deep emphasis, " was out on his lonesome in the middle of the night without warning her," he said all this very quickly and very menacingly while advancing on his hooked nose spawn. But, Severus' admittance that he was with a girl gave Tobias pause, he stared at the youth for a moment, disbelieving. Severus had been out with a girl? Something passed across the man's face--a flash of distant relief, amusement, maybe even a brief flick of pride--he looked as if he were on the verge of smiling and quite possibly willing to shake Severus' hand and welcome him as an equal instead of some base creature. But then, "Right, do you want a medal, a drink maybe?" He said once he recovered his wits enough to react to that. "Putting on make-up and sharing stories about your period doesn't count as being out with a woman, boy."

It’d stopped Tobias in his tracks, it’d been worth it. Severus drew back a step and tightened his arms around his middle, flicking his hair out of his way. “Is that what keeps you out so late? I wasn’t doing either, we were at the graveyard. I picked out your plot,” he spat back disrespectfully, unable to help himself. Being with Lily always made him feel braver, if not stupider. “I’m going to bed, goodnight,” Severus said, turning and starting down the hall then. He wasn’t in the mood.

"Don't you dare, boy!" Tobias snapped, pivoting on the spot to snatch up a glass vase from the rickety corner table to lob it at the lanky teen's back. "How dare you come sauntering in here at three in the morning like you own the damned place then disrespect me?" He demanded, advancing quickly on the boy to jerk him back round by his arm and shove him into the nearest wall, glaring into those soulless black eyes. He gripped at Severus' collar, growling lowly then jerking him forward only to slam him into the wall brutally. "You'd better check your attitude boy before your supposed girl wakes up to find your body in the graveyard." Tobias grit his teeth, his eyes narrowing dangerously, daring his son to challenge him--waiting for an excuse to slap him around though he never really needed one any other time. Now though, now Severus wanted to be a man so let him try it and see just how well he handled himself without that blasted stick of his.

The vase started the hell out of him, winging his shoulder to shatter against the wall beside him. Tobias was on him in no time, jerking him about. Severus gave a pained expression and clamped his eyes shut as he hit the wall both times but then took to staring at Tobias, trying to suppress any real reaction at all. Why give him what he wanted? He was a hell of a bastard. Sometimes Severus wondered if his father got his rocks off being like that. “Apologies,” he said very dryly, palms pressing to the wall. Knowing that with a draw of his wand that he could at least make the attempt to murder Tobias right then and there, but when he tried to move his hands, they didn’t obey.

Tobias shook him roughly and spat a curse at the teen, hand rising from the collar of the boy's shirt to grip instead at his chin in a vice like manner, forcing his head still as if he'd tried to turn away. "Don't you dare disrespect me again in my own house boy. Don't you dare wander off in the middle of the night and come wandering back in whenever you please. You fancy hanging out in the graveyard? On the street? Well then you're welcome to grab your shit--your school foolery--nothing else and get the hell out of this house." Tobias hated this boy, there was no real reason for it--it was just an intense dislike that he'd harbored since Severus could walk. There was entirely too much foggyness on his brain from the alcohol he'd consumed previously to state specifically reasons for despising him--it was enough to say Severus was odd, a useless boy, disappointing. Not someone Tobias was ever or could ever see himself being proud of. The man grit his teeth harder, holding back the violent impulse to strike the boy, instead parting his lips to spit a considerable glob of saliva onto the teen then shove him away. "Get the hell out of my sight."

Severus reminded himself of the costs of using magic against a muggle, what it might mean for his school career, but after Tobias had spat on him, he didn’t care. He was shoved away and caught himself against the wall again, feeling his upset mounting. If he didn’t unleash it somehow, it’d blow out anyways, so he drew his wand on Tobias and lifted it at the last second toward the burning source of light to blow the bulb apart overhead, shorting all of the power in the house in a split second. With the sudden dark, he rushed then for his room to close and lock the door behind him. Severus wiped the spit away shakily and turned to fix a ward on the door to stick it fast into the frame in case Tobias came to try tearing it free like he had so many times before. He wished he hadn’t come home but he had no other choice, sleeping on the street just wasn’t that much more appealing. Stepping back from the door, Severus moved to his bed and slid back onto it, into the corner where it butted up against, hoping that his father tired himself out and gave up before matters got any more out of hand.

Tobias roared at Severus--sounding very much the beast and quite ready to attack him in all his fury. Except the teen ran away and the lights in the house fused and went out, casting the whole place effectively into the shadows. Tobias, fuming and wrathful charged after the escaped teen and promptly banged his leg on another rickety table, drawing another bestial cry from his lips. The slamming down in the distance didn't help his rage any more than the table did and once he was around the surface he was storming down the hallway shouting. "Get back out here and fix it!" He banged on Severus' door with a fist, pounding and kicking at it with a foot. "Fix the god damned light and face me you coward without that blasted stick of yours!" Tobias raged like that for a moment then fell silent, swearing and storming away again and back to the bedroom he shared with his wife. Eileen was awake, unfortunately, but still couldn't stop Tobias from grabbing her by her hair and roughly jerking her from the bed to drag her, protesting and afraid, down the hallway and to Severus' bedroom door. He shoved the distraught woman down and toed her. "Make him open that goddamned door or open it yourself you useless wretch," he growled and nudged her toward it unkindly. Then he addressed the door, or more importantly the boy behind it. "Open it boy or she'll get it."
