Sirius remembers all the things he could have done and said to Regulus as he looks down upon the stony motionless face of the child; things he never said or did out of fear.
Poor Regulus. He didn't deserve this fate. Poor child..
A child he is, no more than sixteen; once so young and sweet, and now cold and silent. He doesn't like it. It makes his eyes sting with tears to see his brother so hurt, and so alone. Regulus' pale face, though deathly still, looks so sad and afraid.
Don't be afraid. I wont hurt you, he thinks. But Sirius knows he has already; knows he has hurt the only one who would ever truly love him, in the deepest, darkest ways. If Regulus was alive he would always remember it. There was no chance for forgiveness now, it was too late.
With a soft sigh Sirius parts his lips to speak, to apologize to his little brother. He wants to tell Regulus how much he loves him, how much he needs him. Explain that he couldn't help him.. He wishes he could force him to understand his choice. How he wants to let him know how he is feeling.
But it all seemed pointless as he observes Regulus' emotionless face. Regulus wouldn't care. Sirius had failed him, and that's all that mattered.
Stroking back the soft curly hair Sirius leans down, pressing his forehead against Regulus' own. He holds him in his arms gently as he closes his eyes, willing his tears away. But to no avail; they fall in spite of his attempt to stop them , staining his cheeks as he presses against the other's flesh.
I'm sorry.
That's not good enough.
I didn't mean for this to happen. You didn't deserve this.
Wiping away his tears, Sirius stands straight, and looks down upon the boy, his only brother. Touching his lips with calloused fingertips he bows his head, his body shaking from the force it takes to hold back his sobs.
I love you.
It hurts Sirius so much to have to say this final goodbye. It's aching deep inside his chest, crushing his heart as his tears spill harder, his teeth gritted as that stony face peers up at him.
Why did you have to join them? Why did you have to die?
Pressing his lips to his little brother's, Sirius gives his final kiss..his last words. He stands straight and brushes back his raven hair, and turns on his heel to walk away.
Sleep with the angels.
