"Girls Under Pressure
A recent study conducted by Girls Inc. reveals that girls today feel an intense pressure to please everyone at all times. The report, The Supergirl Dilemma: Girls Grapple With the Mounting Pressure of Expectations, also found that girls are feeling extreme pressure at even younger ages to be thin and attractive. The study, which surveyed 1,059 girls and 1,006 boys in grades 3-12, as well as 1,005 adults, found that 74 percent of girls said girls are under pressure to please everyone, and 80 percent of girls and boys said girls are “supposed to be kind and caring.” This report exposes gender stereotypes which continue to place an enormous amount of stress on young girls around the country. Rather than focusing on physical perfection and outside approval, girls should be encouraged to pursue their goals in a healthy and comfortable environment.
