[How well do you get along with your family?]
“Like pancakes and syrup,” Lucy answered the therapist’s question. “Seriously. I get along with my family really well. They’re kind of avoidy about the whole slayer thing but they know about it and they’re okay with it. I’m a daddy’s girl but Mom and I are good together too.”
“Have you always gotten along with them?” the therapist asked.
“Yeah but then Daddy rarely says no and Momma is generally a bit too buzzed on Mint Juleps so it’s hard not to get along with them.”
“Your mother is an alcoholic?” The therapist’s eyebrows arched up toward her hairline.
“No!” Lucy said quickly, almost violently. “Momma isn’t anywhere near an alcoholic. Or maybe she is…but she’s functioning? She never hit me or yelled or abused me in any way. She wakes up every morning at 9 or so. She has breakfast, walks on the treadmill, gardens and paints. She heads up committiees and charities. She’s a good Mom. She always has been.”
“And you don’t have any siblings?”
“I have Jill,” Lucy responded without hesitation. “She’s been around since I was five. My family officially adopted her when she was fifteen. She’s pretty much my sister and I wouldn’t change that.”
“Do you have any other family?” the therapist asked as she scribbled notes in Lucy’s file.
“Angel, Scarlett and Big Red,” Lucy answered. “I mean they’re not as close as my family in Alabama but they’re still my family. I get along really well with them too. I mean I annoy Angel and make him crazy but that’s part of being loved by Lucy. I annoy those I love. Scarlett is like a big sister and Big Red is…I don’t know. He’s Jill’s boyfriend.”
The therapist scribbled notes in Lucy’s folder and looked up at her. “You’re-“
“Surprisingly well adjusted. I know!” Lucy chripped, interrupting the therapist. “I’m also surprisingly late. I need to blow this pop stand,” she said as she grabbed her bag and practically ran out the door. There was a shoe sale and a mocha frappacino waiting for her. That was Lucy’s kind of therapy.
