[Carve a Pumpkin]

Takes place during the few days Lucy is in Virgina for Halloween. Co-written with ssa_morgan and i_willpout

Lucy had only been in Virgina one night but she adapted easily to being there. During her previous visits, she'd left a good deal of her things there so that Derek's apartment was almost like a second (or third) home. On this trip, she'd added framed pictures of her and Jill and of her and her parents to the sidebar that had Derek's other pictures on it. Once given permission, Lucy wasn't shy about taking over and sometimes she did so even without permission. Right now, Lucy sat on the back of the chair, bare feet in the seat of it. She was wearing a pair of Derek's boxer shorts and a wife beater. She had her hair pulled up in a ponytail and she was contemplating a pumpkin sitting on the table. She tilted her head and pursed her lips. She held a knife in one hand and she reached out to turn the pumpkin a quarter turn with the other hand.

"This is going to be messy," she said looking down at the Great Dane lying on the floor. He thumped his tail against the wooden floor in response. Derek had popped out to get orange glitter sprinkles for the cupcakes Lucy had made. She insisted that Halloween cupcakes needed Halloween sprinkles. Once the cupcakes were finished they were going to carve a pumpkin and watch horror movies. Lucy already had one of the Freddy movies playing in the background.

Derek parked the black SUV in his normal parking space and turned off the engine. While he was still on call, he had the weekend off... hopefully. Lucy had come to visit as planned and that automatically put him in a good mood. Biting down on one of the keys, he let the rest of the keys dangling from his lips. He turned around to grab the case of beer and the grocery bag from the backseat and then made his way to his apartment door. Even though it was chilly outside, he wore flip flops along with black sports pants with white strips down the sides and a white wife-beater tank. On his head was a black and white bandanna.

At the door, he set the case of beer down and took his keys from his teeth to unlock the door. Clooney of course bounded through the apartment to meet him, tail wagging. After locking the door, he carried the beer and the grocery bag into the kitchen. "Candy aisle was nuts. But I got some of those Halloween Dark Chocolate M&M's" He set the beer and the bag on the kitchen counter and withdrew the bag of M&M's and then a small container of orange glitter sprinkles. "And... Halloween sprinkles. You doin' alright, Pretty Girl?"

"Mmm, you get extra awesome points for braving the candy aisle for dark chocolate M&M's," Lucy said as she put down the knife and walked over to Derek. She went up on her tiptoes and pressed a kiss to the corner of his mouth. "And you're just in time. I was going to start putting up Bear Bryant pictures and murdering the pumpkin," she teased him, arms slipping around his waist. "I'm good. The cupcakes are done and iced. Chocolate chocolate for us. And Vanilla with White icing for Pony. Also, you have on too many clothes," she insisted as she started peeling the tank top off him, pulling it over his head and tossing it somewhere near the couch. "Okay. That's better."

Lifting his arms over his head to help Lucy remove his tank top. He grinned at her and leaned down to kiss the top of her head as he smoothed her hair back with his palm. She had developed a habit of removing his shirts anytime they were at home alone. There was no part of him that wanted to complain about that. "So I was in the store and they had all these insignas for NFL and NCAA teams to carve on pumpkins. I found this one and thought maybe we could carve the A into the pumpkin. Thought it might make you smile, how about it?"

Lucy squealed at a high enough pitch to make Clooney wince when Derek showed her the Alabama insigna stencil for the pumpkin carving. "Sorry Pony!" she apologized quickly then leaned up to kiss Derek again. "You are the most awesome football team ever," she declared, a huge smile firmly fixed on her face. "Let me sprinkle cupcakes and then we'll start carving. There's a sharpie on the table if you wanna trace the stencil on while I'm sprinkling." She pulled away, fingers teasing across Derek's abs as she moved over to the trays of cupcakes she'd made and opened the jar of Halloween sprinkles.

Moving to the table, Derek sat down and taped the stencil to the pumpkin. He picked up the sharpie and began to carefully trace the design over the pumpkin. "I like being the best football team ever. I think it looks good on me. And on us, well... double the good."

"It definitely looks good on you. And me," Lucy agreed as she picked up a plate of cupcakes and carried them over to the table. She unwrapped a vanilla one and tossed it in the air at Clooney. The Great Dane caught it and swallowed it practically whole. She stood behind Derek, arms draped over his shoulders. She snagged a chocolate cupcake, peeled half the wrapper off and held it up to him. "It's the whole reason we're a football team instead of whatever." She still wasn't really ready to admit to herself what she and Derek were. It was easier just to let it be than to dissect and analyze it. "You know the pumpkin is gonna make you miss me more," she half teased him.

"Sweet thing, everything makes me miss you more. Even when I think I can't miss you more, I do. So it's kind of a given." Derek said before he took a bite of the offered cupcake. He chewed the bite up and swallowed it down before speaking again and continuing to trace the design. "You know you should take some of my shirts back to your place... things to remind you of me."

"Mmm how opposed are they to you going to work like this?" Lucy asked, her arms still wrapped around Derek's shoulders. She rested her chin on his shoulder and watched him. "I might just steal everything in your closet now that I've got permission. I do have one of your tee shirts though. I sort of kept it when you were in LA. I wasn't going to tell you but we know how good I am at keeping secrets so oops, cat's out of the bag."

Derek chuckled, a low rumbling sound as he finished the tracing. "I'm on a football team with a thief... a smokin' hot thief." He leaned back to inspect the pumpkin, pulling the stencil off. "You up for cutting this up? Bama pumpkin souffle?"

"I used to shop lift lipgloss from the drugstore," Lucy said as she stepped around Derek and nudged him back from the table to sit down on his lap. "Momma and Daddy knew the man who owned it. He kept a running tally of my lipgloss fetish and added it to what he had to charge Daddy for his blood pressure medicine every month. Just sent the bill to him. Daddy never said a word. I found the bill one month and felt guilty because it was a lot of lip gloss so I stopped shoplifting. I was never good at it anyway."

She picked up the knife from the table and started to cut the top off in a neat circle. Once that was done she pulled the top off, pulling pumpkin guts with it. She wrinkled her nose as she grabbed the plastic bag on the table, preparing to scrape everything off into the bag. "When I was little, we used to give all this stuff to Christine. They never out right lied to me and said she made pumpkin pies from the pumpkin guts but they told me pumpkin pie was made with the insides of pumpkins and Christine always made two pumpkin pies. One for me and one for Jilly. I was spoiled. I still am."

"My momma used to roast the seeds for us." Derek explained, wrinkling his nose as he watched Lucy dig the guts out... which was actually pretty impressive given how girly Lucy normally was. "Since you're doing so good at that I think I'll just let you do that part."

Pumpkin guts were nothing compared to demon guts. Lucy looked over at him and grinned, noting how he wrinkled his nose. She bit her bottom lip, pulling it between her teeth and shrugged as she sucked it up and dug into the main part of the pumpkin with one hand, scraping out the guts as she did. "This isn't even the beginning of gross in my life." She furrowed her brow as she continued to scrape the guts out and dumped them in the plastic bag, getting both hands thoroughly covered and gooey by the time the inside of the pumpkin was scraped relatively clean. Without any warning she turned around and put both icky hands on Derek's face as she leaned in to kiss him full on the mouth. She smeared her hands down his neck and onto his shoulders. "What's the matter, Pretty Boy? Afraid of getting messy with me?" she teased breathlessly, laughter bubbling in her voice.

It took him a moment to realize what Lucy had just done. He looked at her, eyes wide and brows lifted high over his forehead. His jaw hung open just slightly as she slid her hands down his neck to his shoulders, spreading the gooey substance as she did. "Ohhh it's about getting messy, huh?" He asked, both amused and strangely enough... turned on.

"Are you kidding? It's me. It's all about messy," Lucy grinned, wiggling and scooting closer so that there was very little space between their bodies. "Things are liable to get very messy." At this point he had as much pumpkin goo on him as she had on her hands. "Think you'll be okay with that?"

Derek nodded slowly as he stood up, pulling her with him and began walking Lucy backwards towards the bedroom, intent on getting her into the bathroom. "Think we can carve a pumpkin later, Baby Girl?"

Lucy couldn't help laughing as she let Derek guide her back toward the bedroom and the bathroom. "I think we can do that. After a shower and maybe a nap," she said between kissing him and following his lead. The pumpkin could wait, provided Clooney didn't eat it.
