[Lost and Found]

Background piece from when Jill and Lucy are eight. Jill sonata_adagio is abused with love and permission

“Daddy!” Lucy runs break-neck through the house, stumbling over a rug but she manages to catch herself against the door jam and keeps running. He bends at the knees, catching her underneath her arms as she runs at him and lifts her up off her feet.

“What’s up Lucy in the sky of diamonds?” he asks as he sits her against his hip.

“Jilly’s lost.”

His eyebrow quirks up and he grows a bit more still, moving over to set Lucy on the counter in the kitchen so he can look her in the eyes. “Have you two been playing hide and seek?”

Lucy shakes her head, blond hair bouncing around her shoulders. “Nuh uh. Jilly’s lost. She didn’t come to school today. Her daddy was mad ‘cause me an’ her got in trouble at school yesterday.”

“Passing notes?” Tim Locke asks. He was the one that talked to the teacher on that one.

“Uh uh,” Lucy nods, delighted that her dad remembered the incident.
Even at eight she can tell the look on her father’s face is one of concern. “I’ll call Jill’s father,” he tells her as he turns toward the banana yellow phone on the wall.

“Phones don’t work. Jill’s daddy forgots to pay the bill,” Lucy tells him as she wiggles until she slips off the counter, falling on her knee and elicting a pout that fades quickly. “Gonna have to drive.”

Tim nods and grabs his keys from the hook near the back door. “You stay here with your Mom Princess Lucy. I’ll be back in a little bit.”

“Can Jilly spend the night? Since you got to go over there anyhow? Momma and me will make brownies and we can have ice cream with ‘em.”

A smile breaks the concern on his face and he nods. “If Jill’s dad will let me, I’ll bring her back with me. Now go find your Mom and tell her about the brownies.”

“Yaaaaaay!” Lucy yells like a siren as she runs through the house toward the garden where her mother is working with the roses.

When Tim pulls the black BMW up to the curb in front of the tiny, shabby house Jill lives in with her father, the house is quiet. There’s the bark of a dog a few houses down and the milling of some teenagers in the back alley but Jill’s house is silent. He knocks softly on the door and it’s answered by a little blond with eyes too big for her face. He crouches in front of her, much the way he would with his own daughter, and brushes a hand over her hair.

“Where’s your daddy, Jilly?”

Jill shrugs in answer and the motion makes the too-big tee shirt shift on the girl’s thin body. It reveals a row of black-blue fingertip bruises against pale skin. Tim just catches the gasp that comes out of his throat and forces a smile instead.

“Well I came over here because Lucy wants you to spend the night. Why don’t I leave a note for your daddy and then we’ll go back to the house. Lucy and her Mom are making brownies.”

The smile that eventually spreads over the little girl’s face is hesitant but bright. She nods and lets him in. Tim scribbles a note he’s not even certain Mr. Campbell will read and tacks it to the fridge then picks Jill up underneath the arms, bringing her to rest against his hip. She might have been lost but now she is found.
