"I can't say I know exactly when they started." He tried for a smile, it came out more a grimace. The truth was hard for him to accept, given his mental faculties. "There was a time before, and then there is now. I'm still a little hazy on where to draw the line in my mind." Fine tremors made his entire body shake.
"Okay." The doctor didn't sound convinced.
Sighing, Spencer looked down at his folded hands. His pale skin stood out against the soft blue of the medical gown. A moment of irrational hate for the color made him clench them into fists. "What exactly are you looking for? So far, you've given me nothing to indicate you have any idea what's going on."
That stopped the neurologist's pen mid-stroke. Glancing up from the clipboard, the man eyed Spencer over the top of his mini-glasses. "Practically speaking, you're perfectly fine."
"And you're a quack, practically speaking." A tiny amount of humor colored his shaking voice. Fear clenched inside his chest and he swallowed to keep from moaning. He had already been on the edge. This was pushing him over it. "I came to you because I'm told you're the best, but I've seen no evidence of this. Quite the contrary. From my extensive experience, you barely qualify as a doctor. The glaringly obvious mistakes you've made in the past fifteen minutes alone are ridiculous!"
By the time he finished speaking, he had pushed himself to his feet. Spencer trembled with barely suppressed rage and fear. He was angry at the doctor, angry at himself for getting worked up and whatever was wrong with his body.
Why was this happening to him? Did no one know?
When a whimper slipped out, he barely managed to drop his chin to his chest. "I'm sorry. This is difficult for me." Swallowing past the thick knot of emotions in his throat, he tried to draw in a shaky breath. "I just really needed you to find something, anything."
"There's nothing to find." Tone now bored, the man slapped the plastic protector shut over the clipboard. "You can get dressed and leave when you are ready."
Spencer held himself together until the door clanged shut, the bolt locking behind the doctor. The moment he heard it snick shut, he lost what little control remained with a tiny sniff. Half a heartbeat later he began to sob.

It wasn't difficult to find his sunglasses in the messenger bag. They were right on top, folded up in a protective scarf. Physically, he didn't really need them. It was more out of a need for anonymity than anything else that he slipped them on. He didn't really feel like letting anyone see his bloodshot eyes. Once they were in place, he released a sigh of relief.
He took a moment to collect his thoughts, clutching his bag to his stomach. It was far from all right. There wasn't anything he could think of to make this better.
Spencer knew that he had run out of options a long time ago. What he was doing now was wasting time and resources. The old saying about 'the definition of insanity' came to mind. He sucked in a quick breath through clenched teeth.
After a few more drawn out moments to compose himself, he stood up tall. It was getting late and his half-day was almost up. More out of habit, he checked his watch. There was still fifty minutes left in his schedule before he absolutely had to head for the federal building. If he wanted, he could pick up something for everyone and surprise them.
Using his thumb and middle finger spread out over the length of his glasses, he pushed them up. Clearing his throat, head held high, he walked out. A few moments later, he was safely ensconced in the elevator on his way out, no one the wiser.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Outside the glass doors, he paused to stare into their office. There wasn't much activity in the BAU today, but that could change at a moment's notice. It was always the way of these things. He reached to grasp the handle with the hand holding the bag. It banged against the glass, but no one looked up. The door opening did nothing to change that.
Rubbing his index finger along the tray of coffees he carried, Spencer focused on keeping them steady. It gave him something to do besides thinking about his splitting headache. He headed for the break lounge, avoiding a few pushed out chairs on the way. Since they were empty, he assumed most of the unit was out to lunch.
It was a safe bet. The hour was right and people did go to eat en mass.
That meant he was left to his own devices. A quick glance to the clock above agent Sharpova's desk told him there was about twenty minutes of free time. That was good, he could use it to prepare himself further.
"How'd it go?"
Or not.
He had partially been expecting to hear Morgan's voice, so there wasn't much hesitation in his walk. Keeping his head high, he plastered on a fake smile. "Hey, Morgan. I didn't see you when I came in." As long as he didn't look and kept on walking, he could avoid this a little longer.
"Oh, pretty boy, I'm so sorry." And he sounded it too.
"Don't be." Self depreciating smile in place, Spencer swallowed the sudden thickness in his throat. "I...It's just one of those things, you know?" One foot in front of the other. He had just a few more paces to go.
Morgan obviously wasn't going to be so easily avoided. His heavy footsteps were right on Spencer's tail. "Did he give you any usef..."
"Nope, not really. In fact, he was extremely rude, unprofessional, and left me seriously considering reporting him to the medical ethics board." Two more steps. Taking a deep breath, he rushed ahead. By the time he reached out to set the drinks down, they were shaking so badly that some of them had spilled in the carton.
Solid arms wrapping around his waist froze Spencer's heart in his throat. Eyes wide, he tried to pull free. They only tightened further, and jerked him back against Morgan's broad chest.
He shuddered, gasping softly. "Morgan...I, uh, I think..."
"Just stop!" Sliding one hand up to cup Spencer's chin, he made the younger man turn his to the side.
Catching sight of Morgan out of the corner of his eye, Spencer gasped in pain. The throbbing behind his eyes increased his sensitivity to the light to the point of blinding and he began to whimper. He closed his eyes to stop the pain, but it had little effect. "Please..."
Kissing Spencer's cheek, Morgan pressed their foreheads together. "Just tell me what you need me to do. Anything. Name it and I'll do it."
"Please," he begged, "make it stop. Please, please, make it stop." When he heard his love's pained gasp, Spencer lost what little strength he possessed. He sagged in Morgan's arms. When the tears began to fall, he just let them. He no longer had the strength to fight any longer.
THE END.............................
