Age: 24
Appearance: Phoenix is of average height (5'9”) and similarly average build, though he is a bit thick around the shoulders and - contrary to his frequent protests - has a slight paunch that will not go away (he suspects supernatural agents are to blame). He is well-muscled, in keeping with his career, but not overly so, and it is easy to underestimate his strength in normal environments. He most often wears his professional attire (slacks, loafers, dress shirt, tie, suspenders), and favors shades of blue, though he is occasionally seen in greens, darker reds, black, and - once! - pink. Nick is not lazy about his appearance, but he is overworked and underpaid, thus his clothes are often of poor make and he can usually be found in his shirtsleeves with the cuffs rolled up. He has reading glasses, but mostly forgets to use them.
A memorable detail about Phoenix is his peculiar black hair - he gels it (every day and without fail) straight back, so that it sticks out of the back of his head in large spikes. His eyes are a clear and piercing blue, and his brows about them are just as oddly spiked and crooked as his hair. Nick's skin is not particularly pale, but he does have various faded scars (thanks to a childhood of rough-housing and his more recent career choices) and a small, ornate tattoo on his hip that he doesn't remember getting.
Personality: People often view Phoenix as a bit dense, but he is actually rather intelligent. He has well-developed observational skills (though occasionally shows rather scatterbrained tendencies) and often picks up quickly on seemingly insignificant details, using them to their fullest potential, thus earning himself a rather unpredictable reputation. Nick is tenacious, empathetic, and will trust a person absolutely until proven wrong - though even that might not be enough to deter him. He believes absolutely in the inherent good in everyone (and everything), but does not turn a blind eye to their failings. Phoenix is quite sociable, friendly, and generally a happy person, though his inner thoughts can be a bit cynical, and his sly sarcasm tends to surprise people. He is also terribly unorganized, and misplaces things with frustrating regularity.
Nick has an overdeveloped sense of justice and an eclectic code of ethics that has put him at odds with some other hunters who tend towards more extreme methods. He still believes that many supernatural beings are evil, but doesn't generalize all of them - Phoenix wants to give the less malevolent beings a chance. He searches for the truth in each individual.
Abilities/Weaponry: Phoenix is comfortable using most any weapon, but he lacks dedicated training and usually wins through luck or instinctual improv. He is relatively strong, and surprisingly quick for his size. Nick's favored weapons (when he has a need to use them) are a pair of high-caliber pistols, any sort of light sword, and a homemade, very sharp, row of blades that can be attached to his wrist and used much like a katar. He is also quite competent as an exorcist, though his faith in religion in non-specified.
While he is fairly book-smart, Phoenix's real brilliance lies in his critical reasoning skills and his natural ability to think extraordinarily outside of the box. Nick simply doesn't quite think the same way as everyone else. He can see clearly to the heart of any matter and is frighteningly accurate at pulling the truth out. Nick's photographic memory and peculiar way of thinking allows him to make detailed connections long before anyone else.
Phoenix speaks primarily English, but his Italian is passable and he has a basic grasp on Latin and French.
Weaknesses: Although Phoenix has some natural talent in combat, he lacks the skill and fine control to exercise much finesse. He never had much of a chance for proper, dedicated training and can often be overcome by those who actually know what they are doing.
Despite his profession, Phoenix trusts far too easily. When he truly befriends someone, almost nothing will make him change his good opinion of them. Although he acknowledges the bad in people, he rarely believes that they will act on it. He often acts on ideas on a whim, forgetting to think things through or plan ahead, and can quickly find himself caught off-guard and unawares.
History: Phoenix was born the only child to a moderately well-off couple in the Americas. He grew up with his best friend Larry (wild, raucous, and generally always in trouble), which may have contributed to his parents early-onset gray hair and his distressing habit of poking his nose in places best left alone. When Phoenix and Larry were in 4th grade, a new boy by the name of Miles Edgeworth joined their class. The three were, despite Miles' “stuffy” nature, largely inseparable. Phoenix, in particular, became entranced with Gregory's - Miles' father - work as a paranormal investigator. Less than a year later, however, Gregory was killed in an accident while in Allupato on business with his son. Miles was taken in by a distant friend in the area and Nick hasn't seen or heard from him since.
At his parent's insistence, Phoenix went into law school. After a rather scarring trial - where he was framed and nearly murdered by his girlfriend - he dropped law to go into the rather ill-reputed field of parapsychology. His parents were very much against this switch, but Nick was determined and a few arguments later, he cut off most contact with them. Alone now, he became close friends with Mia Fey, the defense attorney from his trial. Mia's connection with the benevolent side of the supernatural world helped to change Phoenix's outlook on such things, and shifted him from the normal “paranormal things are bad: kill them” mentality, to a more understanding idea (see Personality). Nick finished his undergrad, went straight on to get a doctorate in psychiatry, an oddly logical choice for his goals, and picked up some skill in paranormal combat from a small clan in the area. However, Mia disappeared soon after he attained his PH.D (which would have impossible without her), and, alone once again, Phoenix felt the need for a change of scenery.
Naturally, he moved to Europe. After some unsuccessful attempts in other cities, he finally settled in Allupato. The city proved perfect for him, as its high amount of paranormal/human conflicts provided ample opportunity to better understand the supernatural and its true nature, especially in relation to the human world. He now works as a psychologist specializing in Paranormal Relations, and still hunts when the need arises or he has the time, though he is somewhat notorious for attempting to talk the less bloodthirsty supernatural creatures away instead of just killing them. Phoenix and his assistant/resident mad scientist Ema Skye live in a combination flat/office/library/research lab a few blocks away from the D'orazio Monumento Biblioteca.
Organization/Pack/Clan/Guild?: Part-time independent Hunter.
