Wouldn't most people want to go back to their own homes than back to your home?

Most people, probably.

So, what's your home like?

Not at all like this place. My house is a old castle in Cornwall, right on a cliff near the sea. It's not really much of castle, though, since it's been built on and changed so much. There's nothing and no one around, except for us and a village some miles away. But the house is all right. There's gardens and paintings and secrets and secret passages. And it's mine now.

And then there's London, which I like better and have only been to a few times. It's a city, sort of like this one, but with no machines like these, and more carriages. I'm going to live there rather than Cornwall when I'm old enough.

Secret passages? Really?! That's so neat! And it's really all yours?

I live in London, too. My family has a large house there with a garden that you could almost get lost in, but not too many secret passageways. There are quite a few ghosts, though... And sometimes I go to Canton with my mother, and her family's house is even bigger and I actually did get lost in the garden once when I was there, but I don't know much about it because I'm not allowed to wander there around at all.

Do you, really? I could almost get lost in my garden, but Riff can always find me. And I don't believe in ghosts.

Why won't they let you wander around?

I don't really have a choice.

Ah, there are a couple of reasons. First of all, I'm at that age where grandmother says you have to keep boys and girls separate all the time, even though they don't do that in England, and also most people in mother's family... they don't want to run into me in the hallways, I guess.

I suppose that all makes sense. It seems a shame to be in a big house and not be able to explore it.

I've never heard of having to keep boys and girls apart. I've even danced with girls at a party.

I know. What's the point?

Oh? I haven't. Mostly for lack of trying.

I wonder that myself. Perhaps there's some sort of secret they don't want you to find out.

That's too bad. Girls aren't so bad as some boys say they are.

That would be pretty exciting, wouldn't it? Hmm.

Oh, I like girls! I just haven't gotten around to asking any to dance.

It would. That's why I asked, of course. That, and a girl said once that I was the Earl of Secrets, which I think is quite a fine title.

Oh, I see. You should!

That is a very nice title. And I'm sure that there must be at least a few secrets, if not enough to warrant an official title.

I will next time I get a chance, then.
