So my papers are done. One was a research proposal that will hopefully turn into a thesis. I feel totally ambivalent about both. It's a strange sensation - I have not the faintest how either will be perceived, but hopefully the proposal will not be considered utter rubbish ( Read more... )

Yes. A book by Temple Grandin, specifically. From there I will dig into my shelves to decide what's next.

And cookbooks...mmm...cookbooks. I just bought two more vegan cookbooks and I'm excited to try some recipes.

Congrats on being done!! I'm jealous... a few more weeks for me.

What therapy books are you planning to read? That's my research area, so I can provide recs if you want 'em...

Sure. I'm fairly good and finding information (perhaps I should be doing library science, my family has several people with archival bents), but I'm happy to have recommendations. Currently I'm reading about Greenberg's Emotion Focused Therapy. At some point this summer I will be reading some ancillary emotion stuff as well - right now it's Antonio Damasio and Paul Ekman, both of whom I own books by but haven't yet read - but any other recommendations would be great ( ... )

ooh, I'm jealous you're going to learn DBT. Tough to do, but such a cool therapy. I love the EFT stuff too - Greenberg came and gave a workshop for my department this semester and it was one of the most valuable therapy training experiences I've had. If you can, get your hands on his Two-Chair video; it's incredibly cool.

My current favorite therapy book is Yalom's "The Gift of Therapy," which reads like a novel and is filled with gems. If you haven't read Yalom, I'd highly recommend him - the guy has a gift with words. I also just finished "The Man With The Beautiful Voice" by Lillian Rubin, which is a short book of slightly-fictionalized therapy stories, also beautifully written.

Along the lines of more here's-how-to-do-therapy kinds of books, I'm a fan of motivational interviewing (which is my advisor's main area of research). The original book is by Miller and Rollnick and is quite good.

Yeah, I just read his "Letters to a New Generation" book. Pretty good.

Ever read any of Peter Kramer's books? I like his writing a lot, few people seem to read him.

I think we learned some motivational interviewing, though I don't know. We've read a bunch of the Ivey's - which I think qualifies as motivational interviewing.
