"You take what you consider to be your little particle of awareness. So you’re writing a character who’s just dug up a grave and he’s driving back to a hotel. And it’s 3 in the morning. You take your particle of awareness and you BE that person. Like, try to be in their chair. (…) Fuck, you’ve been driving for 16 hours. It’s three in the morning. You just had to dig up a GRAVE. When you walked to the car there was crunching in the treads of your shoes that made you think about how many other graves you’ve had to dig up. Just be there in those… That is writing. Writing is putting yourself into other people’s places and using every scrap of your observational capacity to empathize with what it is and live in details."
