...is the music.
I told
bubastis this yesterday, and at the time, I was pretty sure I'd need to see the movie again before I decided if it was going to be a problem. Having thought about it almost constantly since, it's already a problem (but I'm still going to see it again).
I don't even know what they were thinking. I told Colin last night that at times, it seemed as though they'd given the job of editing the music in to someone whose only previous experience was adding music to weird fanvideos and then putting them on youtube. But I don't even know.
They weren't bad songs, but most weren't used appropriately or just took focus away. "99 Luftballons" and "I'm Your Boogie Man" are the worst examples. "99 Luftballons" was built up and then went nowhere, just so Laurie could look at Dan cleaning his glasses. Adorable, yes, but the music ruined it. I'm all for setting the mood and using music to establish a time period, but that wasn't the way to do it. That was really awkward. The good way to do that was to have a cheesy muzak-y version of "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" playing in Veidt's offices- subtle and hilarious!
I'm still slightly undecided on "I'm Your Boogie Man", though. I can sort of see how it could work, but for now I'm saying it didn't because it just set up the riot scene as mostly humorous instead of, "HEY KIDS, IT'S THE 70S!" It took me out of the scene and weirded me out. Maybe if I go back and know it's coming it won't be so weird, but I doubt it. I also can't decide if "All Along the Watchtower" worked or was just a bit ridiculous. Most likely it's just that in my head, BSG currently owns that song, so I was distracted into thinking, "ooh yes, there will be cylons tonight! Don't forget!"
Maybe I'm nitpicking, but music is a big deal. Sorry music, you can't steal scenes.
The other musical choice I had a bit of a problem with was "Hallelujah", but quite frankly, they can play whatever they want over that scene. GUH.
