I am absolutely loving The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao. Brilliant writing and story-telling aside, it is an extraordinary nerd-fest with constant LotR references, and shout-outs to Doctor Who and Watchmen (among others, I'm just mentioning the ones that made me giddy. The Dark Knight Returns got a mention too but I hated it so much I don't care). I have my bookmark (which is really just a piece of paper wishing me a happy birthday from Mike) on the page where Oscar decides to dress up as Doctor Who for Halloween and his roommate decides to tell him he looks like "that fat homo Oscar Wilde." I also just enjoyed:

...and there was Oscar, keeping me up at night talking about the Green Lantern. Wondering aloud, If we were orcs, wouldn't we, at a racial level, imagine ourselves to look like elves?

I'm glad to be laughing again. I just got through the part about his mother's story and that was depressing.

Goddamn, it's nearly 5:00? What the hell? I have to go eat something and maaaybe make my way down to Obama's East LA headquarters and make some calls. Or do something else. I'd much rather do something else, I hate calling people I don't know.
