Ky took pleasure in the fact that the temperature appeared to be fairly suitable for this much-needed "vacation". It was nice that the island hadn't thrown anything completely random or unexpected at them in terms of weather; although this may have just been wishful thinking, considering that said vacation had only just started. On the way over, the police officer had been silently praying that it would be a peaceful experience overall. ...Surely it would be.

After all, he preferred to be optimistic towards these sorts of things.

And from what he could tell so far, optimism was paying off. There was a warm breeze in the air that smelled faintly of the sea, he noted as he gazed out at the expansive beach. The sun hung in a particularly cloudless sky. It was almost like a scene off of a postcard. As if to add to the completely peaceful ambiance, he could hear the ducklings peeping loudly as Naoto tripped and fell to the ground--

Well. Almost completely peaceful ( ... )

The trip was intended to distract Naoto and give her a much needed break, but the farther they got from what passed for civilization on the island, the more tension Kougaiji could feel leaving his shoulders. The past few weeks had been ...well, difficult was an understatement. Of course most weeks on the island were difficult. This was probably a good idea for all of them.

The isolated beach they had found was perfect. The trip there had been fairly quiet. Naoto seemed lost in her thoughts, which was understandable, given what she'd said about her teacher. Hopefully they would be able to draw her out eventually.

He'd noticed the ducklings following them from the cave, or more specifically, following Naoto. He hadn't been keeping track of them, so he was a little startled by the sudden yelling and squawking. He turned and blinked for a second, then went over to gather up the ducks and keep them from climbing on Naoto.

"Anybody hurt?"

Naoto was able to mumble a brief curse into the sand just before Ky reached her, lifting her head and thwarting Diri's attempt to make a successful leap onto her hair.

"I'm fine," she replied to both of them, giving Ky's hand a glance and then taking it after a long pause and getting to her feet. There was no point in being stubborn and pretending she was invulnerable to the world; both of her roommates had seen her in a miserable state already, anyway.

The ducklings peeped cheerfully, content to be with their "family", and Naoto turned her gaze towards the ocean, palm still resting in Ky's. It was still so strange to think that everything seemed so tranquil when she thought about what the island had been putting her through lately.

"... It looks like this spot will do, won't it?" She lifted her hand to tuck a strand of hair behind her ear, even though she knew the wind would just tease it free again soo enough. "It's like we just completely abandoned civilization."

After helping Naoto up, Ky nodded slightly upon hearing her comment.

"It's very peaceful. I think it's a suitable location to relax for awhile," he said over the peeping ducklings. They appeared to be rather excited about traveling along with all of them. He was glad for it.

"No distractions," he added. "No monkeys or dingoes. No islanders making loud scenes. Just the three of us."

He could of sworn he heard Diri peep almost indignantly. He smiled faintly.

"Forgive me. I meant 'just the seven of us.'"

((thought I'd reply as a new comment, since the thread above is getting epic squished))

Ky blinked. There was damp sand clinging to his face.

"I... somehow doubt that was entirely accidental," he commented, but there was good humor in his tone.

He gave Naoto a questioning, yet somewhat amused look. He didn't wipe the sand off just yet.

Kougaiji caught the sudden movement out of the corner of his eye, and his reflexes had him moving almost before he registered it. Unfortunately he only managed to wind up with sand in his hair instead of on his face. He looked at Naoto with barely concealed amusement as he tried to brush the sand away. "Your hand slipped," he commented dryly. "I see."

There was another flicker of movement, and a handful of damp sand suddenly crashed into Naoto's section of wall. "Oh my. I have no idea how that could have happened."

"He said 'awkward topic', and I think getting hit in the face with sand is awkward eno-- hey!"

Naoto glanced down at her pitiful wall, now with an additional lump that did nothing to enhance the look.

".... So you give my wall a tumor in return? I see how it is. In that case..." She scooped up a handful of sand, eyes glinting mischievously. "I think you'd better run before my hand accidentally slips again."

Ky put a hand in front of what little of the emerging sandcastle he managed to create (wall included), as if that would somehow stop any possible future "attacks" from Naoto.

"A surprise attack?" he said with a slight smile. "I hardly think that's very fair at all."
