Maybe if I tried to make necklaces or bracelets out of them, I could give them away...

Here, money, wealth, and things to that degree mean nothing. Therefore, these gems would mean little in the way of material wealth. So, why not take what you have, and make it into something positive? These gems can mean so much more than mere monetary value; rather, since such is meaningless, why not make it sentimental value?
