Wishing all the cheeriest of holiday cheer I come bearing a smattering of
yuletide recs.
To start I pay much and genuine homage to my gifts (that's right people, plural) from one lovely (at-the-present) anonymous author from that oft-overlooked fandom of
Ballykissangel. I've been to Avoca for the sole purpose of going to Assumpta's pub and visiting Peter's church (much to the amusement of the Co. Wicklow librarian and much to the consternation of my travel companion who I abandoned in Dublin), so it's fair to say I like Ballyk.
Ballykissangel
A Cottage by the SeaThis is an exquisite reading of Peter/Assumpta and of what might have been if Assumpta didn't die. It's well written, it's amusing, it's tender, it pays a delightful amount of attention to details that make my heart glad. It's the greatest gift I could have imagined getting this yuletide :)
Jackson SquareAs if I hadn't been spoiled enough, this is a small sequel, or accompaniment, to
A Cottage by the Sea. This piece expands on the truly beautiful concept that Peter becomes closer to God through his love for Assumpta, not further apart because he's left the priesthood. Simply wonderful.
History Boys
now for a breath i tarryRUN, don't walk, to this intelligent, beautiful, extraordinary piece of writing. I have gushed and privately rec'd this to friends that adore
The History Boys and they've agreed with my (not-at-all OTT) assessment.
If the thought of sprinkling your holiday reading with some Shaw, Whitman, Keats, The Beatles - for goodness' sake - sends you to a happy place then get thee to
now for a breath i tarry and bow before it and covet it like I do!
Beautiful People
Dressing Up is More Than a HobbyThis is a witty, camp, blissful
Beautiful People/
HSM3 subtle crossover. Ryan features in this particular story of Simon's and it's just a treat to read. Fluffy and lovely and completely enjoyable.
Wire in the Blood
I do sometimes wonder if I adore the characters of Tony and Carol or
Robson Green and
Hermione Norris...a bit of both I suspect. Anyway I digress and there is
Wire in the Blood stories to be had.
Rumours, Not-Curry and the Cosmic Scale of ImportanceThis is a great little Tony/Carol story. Case-in-point, the following from Carol:
"Oh, and by the way, Tony and I getting married at the weekend, hope you can all make it. Kev, wear your good shoes, not the scuffed ones, and Paula, would you mind being the flower girl?" She surveyed them, giving herself a moment to enjoy their uncomfortable expressions, before continuing, "Grow up, everyone. We're supposed to be helping and protecting the public, remember, not arsing about like the bloody gossip mongers we loathe and despise. We still have a killer out there, and on the ultimate cosmic scale of importance, doesn't that far outweigh my potential love life? Get it together, right?"
GOLD!
I'll post my contribution to the madness that was
yuletide sometime in the new year when reveals are made.
Also, much thanks to
littlerhymes who goaded me into participating, had a look over my never-quite-finished piece, and who has written something truly marvellous for another obscure fandom.
