Well, I did not see this coming. I was watching all these new indie bands - the Franz Ferdinand led new british scene, the broken canadian scene, the american followers of Modest Mouse - waiting to see if any of them leapt out at me yelling "here! here is the new direction for your taste in music!". And with my back turned, The Postal Service crept up like ninja and stabbed me in the back with a dagger made from electrobeatylappoptrancemo.
As you may be aware, I know absolutely nothing about music. I mean, I know about the emo genres, and I know plenty of bands, but the further I stray from emo, the less and less I know about genre. And my knowledge of music theory, chord progressions and the like is roughly equal to my knowledge of food. I know what I like; some of it may be made from the finest ingredients money could buy, most of it's probably made of processed cow brains, but I don't care. All I need to know is that I like it.
Which brings us back to electrobeatylappoptrancemo. I have no idea what makes a band electrobeatylappoptrancemo, I just know that some bands I've become interested in recently play some electrobeatylapoptrancemo type stuff. And I know that these bands range from DNTEL and The Postal Service to Hellogoodbye to Enter Shikari to Inmoor and beyond. I couldn't tell you what I like about electrobeatylappoptrancemo any more than I could tell you what I like about emo. But it's strange. I was expecting someone like Cursive to release a track or an album that made me want to explore some new branch of the indie ubergenre. I am entirely unprepared for an assault from a more technically minded direction. Not too long ago, the only electronics I wanted from a band were two guitars (lead and rhythm), a bass and two mics (vocals and screams).
And all of this again leads me to the question: Have afi been directing my changing tastes for the last six years, or are we both just walking along similar paths?
