...I really shouldn't be allowed near iTunes ever. fgsfds.

I decided to finally install Genius. I promptly downloaded Metropolis - Janelle Monae's LP. (And Drake's second single off his new album - "Find Your Love" - but we will not talk about that. Because I generally have good taste - except when I don't (ex., Lady Gaga).)

At any rate, did not like Metropolis quite as much as The ArchAndroid - don't get me wrong, it's still a great album, but it wasn't as mind-blowing. The "Metropolis" (referring to the film - she said that it was the primary inspiration for her current album) theme is much more apparent there - moreover, it just feels a bit more quirky for the hell of it.

Then again, when I first saw the video for "Tightrope," I dismissed that as quirky for the hell of it, so my judgment isn't necessarily accurate.

The thing is, the songs are good on their own - but I noted that a lot of songs on ArchAndroid flow into each other seamlessly. In a way, the entire album is symphonic (in the intros - the Suite Overtures - quite literally). Metropolis doesn't quite have that on the first pass.

On multiple passes, though - I think that what might be it is exactly that. Metropolis, although themed, is more bright and psychedelic. While her current album has moments like that ("Make The Bus" and "Wondaland", "Mushrooms and Roses"), it's a bit less (*ahem*) psychotropic.

Or to be more blunt, I think Metropolis was done on more blunts.

I think in the end, the explanation was probably best given by my friend Alex (although this was in regards to "Iron Man 2"): The original was more concerned with establishing backstory (which is...really trippy), and the sequel was free to do whatever the fuck it wanted in its world.

In other news: Busting out a tag I haven't used in ages. Mostly because I've spent much of my free time in the past week trying to figure out a suitable fit to the new attack speed formula on Renewal. Why the developers had to make it so difficult I don't know.
