[...In...Jail.]

*In the basement of Will's house is the jail. It's the expected dank, cold place - three cells with stone walls and  barred doors, and no windows. Chester is sitting against the back wall of the cell he shares with Garr, staring at nothing in particular.*

*has returned to relaxing against the back wall*

It could be worse.

It already is worse for me. I'm chained to the wall in this dank cell.

(And you're not in my cell. So it could be worse.)

What did you do to that woman that she stuck you to the wall, anyway?

I dunno. She was acting rough with me before I even started complaining when she dragged me around the city.

My wrists hurt from all the yanking she did.

*feels slightly sorry about being so cheerful now. ...Only slightly.*

I guess she's mad that I got you off the hook earlier. Lot of good that did you, though.

Hey, I'm still thankful for that.

I guess I'll just have to behave a bit in the city. And hold mage contests further away from here.

...Mage contests?

Yeah, there's a whole lot more people here that can use magic than I thought. And most of them don't even have elven blood in them! We just wanted to see who was the best mage out of them all.

Too bad we never found out who was the best. Oh well~

"Elven blood"? And how could you even measure something like that, anyway?

Poke a hole in me and take out a measuring cup?

Or go the easy way and ask who my parents are. I'm not sure how you'd exactly measure it when it's thinner than just half of each but whoever has at least a bit of elven blood in their veins can use magic.

That's... not what I meant.

Arche, he meant how do you measure who the best mage is?

And Senel...(as a more coherent explanation...)

In our world, in order to use magic - ...erens... - you have to have had an elf as an ancestor at some point.

Huh. Elves are just fairy tales here... But eres is pretty rare among humans. Erens only even started appearing around 50 years ago.

So Arche's an elf or something? You don't look like one. Your ears aren't even pointed.
