So what's it about and why should you watch it?
East West 101 is a short series (6 episodes in season 1) about the Major Crime Squad in Sydney. Detective Malik is a Muslim who works with a racist, misogynistic, old school Senior Detective called Crowley (played by William McInnes of Seachange and Blue Heelers fame). When Malik was twelve his father was shot in an armed robbery at their family shop and brain damaged as result. Malik was a witness.
The story of his hunt for the man who shot his father is entwined with weekly cases that show the variety of communities living in Sydney. In the six episodes the communities shown include Arabic, Vietnamese, Indigenous Australian, Pacific Islander, and Serbian. In doing so, the show doesn't shy away from racism or religion. It also allows its characters to be three dimensional and operate in shades of grey. One of the sequences that most caught my attention was when Malik and his wife, who we first see wearing a hijab, have quite a passionate sex scene.
At the same time Crowley spends much of his time under investigation for the murder of a drug dealer he considered responsible for killing his son. Malik's actions in trying to find his father's attacker and dealing with Crowley cause tension between him and his partner, Detective Koa, and the dynamics of their partnership and friendship are fascinating to watch.
While the stories focus on the men, the women aren't too shabby either. It's nice to see a woman in charge of men, and it's nice to have competent female characters who are unique and don't seem to live in a vacuum. Despite being secondary characters, you never get the sense that the women are there only to prop the men up.
Lastly, the acting is great.
Where can you watch it?
SBS has been putting the
episodes online, but unfortunately they're only doing one at a time and they're already up to episode 5.
Because of this I've uploaded
Episode 1. I also plan to upload the other episodes of season 1 and possibly season 2 (when it airs).
Episode 2 Anyway, I hope a bunch of you download this and enjoy it as much as I have. Let me know what you think.
