By one p.m. that day Bruce Joshua Adams was relaying dispatches to the Magnanimity site. The great Russian lift-off had begun at McGuire Air Force base. To the woman in the capsule, there came a flood of relief and joy. For a moment her hand fell from the key and she was ready to spring up, exultant, but her lessons had been hard and she kept her vigil. Through the forty-eight hours, from every state the messages poured in, until on October 28th, at twelve noon, Eastern Standard time, she received the ultimate signal. The evacuation was complete. Martha Adams rose, shaken but still strong like her beloved United States. As she made her way to the surface, death touched her once more when she passed the body of Virinsky. But up above, tossing her bright hair, she walked out into the sunlight of the free land.
