The following is a political post, feel free to skip it if that has no interest to you.
Today something beautiful has happened. It's not often I see people so up in arms about politics. Usually there is an air of helplessness about politics that permeates the whole area. They are big entities which we are powerless to do anything against. Today I feel there is actually hope. One:The Defense Of Marriage Act was struck down as unconstitutional. Boo yah, equality and a step in the right direction!
Secondly: A woman senator stood up and filibustered for 12.5 hours to stop 80% of the legal abortion clinics from closing in Texas. She couldn't break for food, she couldn't sit down, she couldn't stop talking. She kept talking. They tried to shut her down and she responded back with "Parliamentary Inquiry: At what point does a woman senator have to raise her hand or her voice to be heard over her male colleagues?" The crowd cheered for twenty minutes straight. The bill timed out and they were unable to pass the bill. The senate tried to tried to chance the time stamps so that the vote would happen on the previous day. But having so many people watching them forced the truth to come out.
I can't remember the last time a crowd cheered like this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=qsfmNF3u2yo because a senator was wronged. It is very rare to find something that actually lights a fire under people and I am actually very touched that people have actually found something to rally under. I hope something can come of this awareness.
I am so happy. Yes there are still horrific things going on in politics today. Texas is redistricting to purposefully make it harder for blacks and Latinos to vote after part of the Voting Rights Act was struck down. The Supreme Court said that silence can be used to incriminate yourself thanks to Salinas v Texas. In Iowa the governor must be asked personally for an abortion. But for now I am glorying in some
