A Day in the Life of Luna i_llbedammned August 9 2006, 02:06:17 UTC
It was an average day for Luna Lovegood, but, as you might expect, an average day for Luna was an extraordinary day for anybody else. Everyday she saw exotic creatures, even when nobody else did.
She woke up in the girl's dormitory late on Saturday, so late that everybody else was gone. The sun was pouring through the windows of the Ravenclaw tower, which never happened before noon. Lazily she got dressed, almost forgetting to put her robes on over her Muggle clothing. It wasn't that she was really into Muggle culture, that wasn't why she liked their clothing. She was simply wearing them for giggles one day and found that wearing those clothes repelled Whispering Whirragigs, the creatures who purposely tripped wizards to make them look foolish.
She made her way down to the great hall and helped herself to some water and food, shoving bits of her meal into the home-made pockets she had sewn onto her robes to feed to her pet Puffskein, the one that she had to smuggle into Hogwarts since legally those things weren't allowed. She knew she shouldn't do such things, but it was just too adorable to leave at home. She finished up her meal and then observed the slowly growing population of the Great Hall. There were a few people at her own table, but they purposely sat at the other end. Luna didn't take offense; they just probably had a secret that no one else could know about. Across the hall she saw Hermione Granger sitting over a book and looking like she was trying to concentrate. She really works too hard, Luna thought, "All she's going to do is invite Negglas into her head. I'd better go help her out before the Negglas get to work and she has a headache for weeks."
Luna dropped herself in the seat directly next to Hermione. "Hello Hermione."
Hermione didn't answer.
The Negglas must really be trying to take over now. Luna thought. A determined look came over her face, “You know I think I saw Ron staring at you before."
Hermione sighed and looked up from the book. "Luna, what are you talking about?"
I knew that'd get her attention. "He was looking at you rather funny. Maybe he's one of the few wizards who can see Negglas."
"The what now?" Hermione looked confused.
"Negglas. You know, the beasts that creep into wizard's heads and make them devoted to one thing that later causes them trouble." Luna stated, as if this was common everyday knowledge.
"Ah-yes, that must be it." Hermione quickly changed the subject, “So what did you come over to talk about Luna?"
"Negglas. You're being attacked by one. It happens to everyone at times. I remember one time I was attacked by one. It was right before my OWLs. I suddenly became very focused on Magical Runes and toast. I don't know why toast, Negglas pick the oddest things to make your mind focus on. What-"
Hermione opened her mouth to say something, but then closed it, "You know what Luna, you're right. I think I should be off to get rid of those Negglas,” she said quickly before running down one of the halls.
Luna sighed, "I never even got a chance to tell her how to ward them away. Oh well, she's smart. I'm sure she'll discover how on her own."
With Hermione gone Luna drifted out of the Great Hall, finding nobody else that she was friendly with among the crowd. Deciding from the lack of clouds on the Great Hall's ceiling that it was a nice day out, she let her feet carry her outside.
She stopped near the giant squid's lake. I wonder what the real name of this lake is? I'm sure it hurts it terrible to just be referred to as the giant squid's lake. It has to have a real name, everything does. She sat down and started brainstorming new names to call the lake.
A high pitched voice pierced through her thoughts, "Luna!" the next thing Luna knew she was tackled from the side by thin, third-year girl.
Luna blinked and shoved the girl off of her so she could sit up again, "Hello Kelly. I'm glad to see you're doing well today."
The black girl giggled in glee, "I'm so happy I was able to find you. I was just on my way back to the tower to wake you up. I've found something you really need to see."
"What?" Luna inquired
Kelly got to her feet and extended her hand to Luna, "Follow me and you'll see."

Luna took the extended hand and pulled herself up, nearly pulling Kelly down in the process. "Lead the way."Kelly nearly ran all the way there. Luna was panting heavily by the time Kelly stopped. "You know...we all aren't...track stars like you."
Kelly looked behind her, "What's a track star?"
"A muggle sport. Made of running, a lot. I just learned it in my Muggle Studies classes." Luna answered.
Kelly still looked confused, "Well I don't know about that, but I just like to run and explore everywhere. I keep forgetting to tell you when I'm going out so you can join me."
Luna stared at the scarlet-haired girl eagerly, "Where do you go?"
Kelly shrugged, "The woods, the school grounds, Hogsmeade. Everywhere."
Luna brushed a strand of hair behind her ears, "You go to the woods?"
Kelly looked behind each shoulder before she answered, "Yeah. It's exciting when you go there because you know you shouldn't. You have to be very careful when you're in there though. It wouldn't be very good if someone found you wandering around in there."
"Have you ever seen any Kneazles or Cuy?"
Kelly shook her head, "No, I've only been in a few times since it's not too good to go alone. I haven't seen anything more interesting than a few Augreys. I think I saw a Cuy though, that's why I called you over here."
"Where exactly are we?" Luna had long ago lost all sense of direction in their long run over.
"We're near the groundskeeper's house. Keep quiet though, otherwise it will get scared and run away." Kelly put a finger over her lips to emphasize the point.
Luna nodded. She didn't need to be told about Cuy, her father helped edit the article where it first discovered them and unveiled to the world. She followed Kelly cautiously to the borders of the woods and walked a few steps in. Then she saw it.
It was hard to see at first, but then all at once she saw it clear as day. It looked like a child with reeds for hair, slimy skin, and sharp teeth. "I don't think that's a Cuy, Kelly." Luna whispered to her friend, "It looks too vicious to be a Cuy."
At the sound of their voice the creature turned around. "Help me," it said, sounding shaky. The creature started to cry.
"See it's harmless." Kelly said, stepping nearer to the creature.
Luna looked at it warily, "I wouldn't go too near that thing."
"Hey, you kids get away from there." said a deep voice from behind them, "You know you're not allowed-" The towering figure of Hagrid came towards them, but stopped as he followed Luna's pointed finger towards the creature. He only paused a second before he bowled into the boy-creature, knocking Kelly out of the way, and shoved a bridle over his head.
"What was that for?" Kelly yelled from the ground, rubbing a sore elbow.
Hagrid pet the boy creature, cooing to them, "He's just scared."
Luna helped Kelly off the ground, "Is that a Cuy, Hagrid?"
"A what now?" Hagrid asked.
"A Cuy." Luna restated.
"Never heard of that before. This is a Kelpie. Isn't he just adorable?" The Kelpie in return tried to gnaw one of Hagrid's fingers off, but was stopped from doing so by the charm on the bridle.
"Do you always carry around that bridle with you, just in case?" Luna asked, now more interested than creeped out.
"No, I was just looking for him. He got away.," he paused and looked at Luna and Kelly, "Uh, Could you both not mention anything about this to anyone? If word gets out-well it wouldn't be good."
Kelly nodded, looking a bit frightened of the grounds keeper and the fact that she nearly fell into a deadly trap. Luna followed in suit, but without the fear. In a world where even normal things were looked down upon, something as odd and exotic as a Kelpie would certainly be trouble.

The end i_llbedammned August 9 2006, 02:07:31 UTC
"Would you mind if we pet him before we leave?" Luna asked.
Hagrid thought for a moment. "I don't suppose it will do any harm as long as the bridle 's on him. You two really should be getting back to the castle, though. Sun 'll be setting soon and it's no good to be here in the night."
Luna reached over and pet the Kelpie's snout, watching as it changed to take the traditional form of a horse with reeds for a mane. Kelly kept her distance from the thing.
Luna spent the rest of the day fantasizing about what it would be like to be a Kelpie.
An average day for Luna Lovegood was better than an average day for other wizards. It wasn't that anything exciting happened on its own, but she made sure that at least once a day she saw a creature that nobody else saw, or at least that nobody would admit they saw.
