So, we're on this cleanse....
Our grocery bills are through the roof, our night life has become much less destructive, and mostly... I feel freaking awesome.
Day two was terrible, complete with crabbiness and headaches and OH SO MANY CRAVINGS. Day three and four had the usual afternoon headache. Day five was rough as people were generous and brought in cake, donuts, and coffee - but I suprised myself by ACTUALLY being able to say no. Day six we were at a social gathering in the city... again, no cake, and I realized my consumer/snacking/coffee habits are much worse when out-and-about. (And saying no trickled over to my shopping habits?!?!?) Day eight we had a bit of a relationship/team work issue, but got over it.
And, now? Yep. Feeling awesome. Actually, most of those days I felt pretty great.
I miss cheese and breads (mostly at restaurants), and the coffee ritual, but the booze and snacks? Not as bad as I expected.
The first 9 or 10 days were especially tough because of our 'boil water' issues... Turns out it's WAY more of a pain to make meals in a tiny kitchen when doing dishes is even MORE of a giant pain in the ass.
We talked about it yesterday, and figure we will carry a few things over from the cleanse into our 'real life.' Namely - a few of the recipes, the smoothie breakfast, the regular-and-already-prepared snacks, measuring things carefully and sticking to portion size, making 2x things and saving half for lunch (I always tried to do it, but would end up eating more.), and hopefully making a bit of a meal plan at the beginning of the week and grocery shopping for it once. (Ie. not buying extra food and then not eating it.)
It's been an odd shift - I used to cook a fair amount, but when A. moved in, his fast-food habit overwhelmed mine (especially when tired from a long day at school or stressful life moments.) This has been a crash course back into cooking regularly - we are spending MINIMUM an hour a day in the kitchen chopping, blending, and cooking.... but almost ALL of the food tastes great, and one of us is being forced to encounter foods he has never prepared before. (Hooray for forced experimentation!)
Other than that? Things are swell.
-I had a job interview type deal earlier this week. It's a secondment to work for division office with 6-12 other people on developing a "flexible learning" system - basically a web-based, self-paced distance learning type model for a handful of courses. It looks like it will be ~.25 first semester to develop a course or three and then .25 the next semester to implement it. Basically, it's a reason to a) work as a team b) problem solve and c) play with technology. Not to mention, spice up what I'm doing in the class right now. SUPER EXCITING.
-Baseball started!! I'm on two teams again, so four games (combined with school stuff and cleanse cooking and prepping) is a little overwhelming, but it feels amazing to be outside (thanks for cooperating, weather!) and spending time with some of my favorite people again (and a few of my not-at-all favorites, but that comes with the territory.)
-five-ish weeks left until diplomas. Which means five ish weeks until I am teaching one class. And six-seven weeks until I am back marking again, and then FREE FOR SIX WEEKS.
The thirtieth birthday is impending. Coincidentally, it aligns quite nicely with an old friend's wedding in Cali and our first anniversary. Which means, frankly, I will turn 30 on a surf board in Santa Cruz. Right after celebrating July 4th in San Francisco. And right before touring the red woods and helping a pretty great dude start a new chapter in his life.
Sounds like an exciting time to be kicking.
