Today was the happiest birthday I've had in a long time. I went through the customary 'why am I getting old and doing nothing with me life' angst, but it was pretty abbreviated. For the most part, I just had fun.
First, I got the best present ever:
NEVER FORGET. I can't wait to wear it to the Bruins/Oilers game in February.
And then my mom and I went to the Adams National Historical Park! I can't believe I grew up an hour outside Boston but had never gone, it's a travesty (my mom grew up 5 miles away in Milton, and she had never been either). So, since on birthdays you get to make people humor you, I finally got to go.
We had to wait about 2 hours for the next open tour, so we walked around Quincy, explored an old cemetery full of Revolutionary War vets, and stopped in a sports bar to have a beer and catch some of the Sox game. A pretty good Sunday afternoon in and of itself.
And then the houses. IT WAS SO COOL.
The house John Adams was born in
The garden at The Old House, where Abigail and John moved later
I love old houses, and just seeing all the cool old furniture and thinking about what their lives were like. But my grad degree was in early American history, and I focused my big research project on Revolutionary Boston. I'm not an expert on Adams, in particular, but I just love everything to do with that period. And being in the rooms where he did so much of his thinking and writing and living was just, gah. I went into full on fangirl mode, it was just too surreal.
The library at The Old House was one of the coolest places I've ever been. I wanted to curl up in one of the leather chairs and just breathe in the smell of old books forever. Why does no one have awesome, masculine old libraries anymore? I think we should bring them back.
So yeah, if you ever find yourself in the Boston area, it's definitely worth the extra short trip out there. Now I need to watch the John Adams miniseries (how did I never do that before now?)
(on a side note, am I the only person in the world who would read the hell out of some John Adams/Thomas Jefferson fic, y/n? Estranged bffs and political rivals, who reconcile late in life and die on the same day, tell me there isn't romantic potential there)
After that we met up with my brother for dinner downtown. And then we came home and had cake:
Because I may be 26, but dinosaurs will always be awesome.
So yeah, it was pretty damn awesome. Thanks to everyone for the messages and texts, they totally made my day :D
And now I have one more day of lazing around before I have to be an adult and go back to work. Boo.
