The Sox beat the Jays 13-0 today, and Middlebrooks had 3 home runs, out of the team's total 6 in the game. THAT'S LIKE A BASEBALL HAT TRICK.
Seriously, we are looking so good, everyone is just on. So. I've chosen to channel all this excitement into a picspam, because apart from being really damn good at baseball this season, my team is also not bad to look at. THEY'RE SO ADORABLE, AND I HAVE SO MANY FEELINGS ABOUT ALL OF THEM.
To start with we have my favorite player (if you didn't catch that already), Will Middlebrooks.
Will came up from Pawtucket last season when Youkilis was out injured. I was at Fenway for his second or third major league game, where he hit a grand slam to tie the game, which basically made him my favorite, period.
He played so well that the Red Sox traded Youk and made Middlebrooks their permanent 3rd baseman, which was bittersweet. Because Youk was on the 07 team and holds a very special place in Boston's collective heart, but on the other hand, we really needed some fresh young talent. Of course, Middlebrooks went on to break his wrist and sit out the end of the season, but he's off to an amazing start this year, and fans are definitely taking notice.
Then, the second Sox in my heart, Jacoby Ellsbury. Ellsbury was here for the 07 Series win, which of course makes him one of my favorite people. He's a great hitter and, when he's not injured for months on end, generally leads the league in stolen bases. Boy is fast as a rocket.
But also, on a purely emotional level, I can't help but picture him as Benny from The Sandlot, all grown up. I mean, look at that face, and his speed and power, he's totally Benny The Jet. I HAVE A LOT OF FEELINGS ABOUT THAT MOVIE, OK?
Um. Anyway.
Then we have Dustin Pedroia, more commonly called just Pede (like, PD). Or Laser Show (don't ask).
I think of Pede as the heart of our team. We haven't had an official captain since Varitek was knifed in the back by the organization retired, but I think of Pedroia as the unofficial captain. He's probably one of the hardest workers, and he gives 100%, all the time. The other night the Sox were ahead by like 6 runs, and Pede still slid into first base, almost injuring himself in the process. FIRST BASE, GUYS, YOU ALMOST NEVER BOTHER SLIDING INTO FIRST. He's that intense, all the time. And he's always looking out for the other guys, and sticking up for them to the media, and trying to keep morale up, even when last season was in the toilet. He's an amazingly athletic player, and just an all around good guy. Pede is the Red Sox (and also Dunkin Donuts' most adorable spokesman).
Also, he's legit magic:
Look at him fly.
Next up is Jarrod Saltalamacchia, which is fun to say, but also wicked hard to spell, so we call him Salty.
He's our main catcher now that Varitek got screwed over retired (I have a lot of feelings about that incident, ok?). He didn't have a great hitting season last year and some people were saying he's past his prime, but screw them. His custom-chosen music for when he comes up to bat is Rock Me Amadeus, which automatically makes him one of my favorite people in the world.
He also has this ridiculous hair that I kind of want to touch.
We also have Daniel Nava, one of our outfielders. I love his story. He was called up in 2010 to fill in when Ellsbury was injured. On his very first major league pitch, he hit a grand slam. He's only the second player in history to do that. That's pretty fucking special. Since then he's been up and down from the minors, but he started this season with us, and I hope he'll stay.
He also has an adorable freakin smile. Seriously. Look at that face.
Oh my goodness, child.
Then there is Clay Buchholz, one of our starting pitchers. Clay is...sort of unpredictable. When he's on, he's on, but when he's having an off day, well, things can go to shit pretty quickly. His first outing of this season was great, so let's hope that's a sign of things to come.
(this pic gives me lots of pitcher/catcher feels, in the non-porny sense)
And of course we can't forget David Ortiz, affectionately known around here as Big Papi, and come on, don't you wanna give this guy the most epic of all bear hugs? I do.
Ortiz is our DH. He's big and slow so he relies on his power to slam the ball out of the park. He's been out since last fall with an injury, but there's talk that he may be back soon. Let's hope so, though the other guys seem to be picking up the slack in the home run department just fine. He's the last player left from the 04 team (unless I'm forgetting someone), so he holds an especially large place in fans' hearts.
JUST COME BACK, PAPI.
And now from our most senior player to our newest: Jackie Bradley Jr, or, as he's already become known, JBJ.
Honestly, I don't know much about him yet. But new kid has been tearing it up out there and definitely proving himself, I think he's already a fan favorite (you can already buy his official shirt, whereas I had to customer order a Middlebrooks shirt last year). We've got so much fresh young talent on our team, it makes me excited.
(that's the ball from his first major league hit, just a week ago)
And lastly, he's now a coach instead of a player, but I don't even care, because HE'S MY FAVORITE PLAYER EVER AND HE'S BACK IN A SOX UNIFORM, FUCK YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS.
Pedro Martinez, guys. Love of my baseball life.
And there are others, of course, baseball rosters are huge and I couldn't possibly go through all of them (plus there's a lot of new guys I'm still getting to know). But those are the guys who will be taking up most of my time for the next 7-8 months.
In other news: tomorrow night is the Bruins/Canes game and I'm so amped up I can barely stand it. WHY IS IT NOT TOMORROW NIGHT YET. My first hockey gaaaaaaaame, eeee!
