Given a Lack of Publicity

I suppose I shouldn't be bothered. However, I just read through my last few posts. In addition to changing tense at random, I typically and remarkably use the words 'typically' and 'remarkably' a lot. The purpose of maintaining this journal is simply to remind myself of experiences, and since (hopefully) nobody actually reads this other than me, I probably shouldn't be bothered. For some reason, though, realizing my writing is remarkably typical of an 8th grader causes me to be remarkably disappointed in myself.

It's odd that the more I learn of another language- being quite comfortable with the inevitability of my weak level of communicative ability in said language- the less critical I am of my English. If you read my English correspondence with Nickie in Japan or Sebastian in Chile, it's pretty bad. I tend to tailor it to the broken styles of English they use when writing to me. I'm still a slight bit of a grammar and word-usage Nazi, but I've become less concerned with perfection and more concerned with effective communication as a result of my interaction with so many great folks abroad. I'd trade my awareness of you're/your, too/to/two and such for some basic understanding of Chinese characters any day.

Speaking of Chinese characters, it costs about $6,500 to buy an around-the-world airplane ticket with 12-15 stops along the way. I'm 32, and I somehow hate the city I love every other day. Make cents of that if you wanna. Yes, cents. Obviously I have no sense.
