Today was my first day of my "May 4, 1970 and Its Aftermath" class. I've been kinda sorta requested to post my notes and other stuff from each class (mostly for Emma, who's really shown an interest in this class).
The class isn't just about that day - it'll cover the 60's, from the civil rights movement to Woodstock, and then the coverage of the shootings. And all the stuff we need to read is on our WebVista site.
Today, we introduced ourselves to the class, and Dr. Barbato told us what the class would cover. Then we went into talking about the book we need to read - Hippies by Peter Jedick. He lived off-campus during the whole thing, and his book's loosely based on his experiences. Good luck finding it - it's basically out of print, but I think Amazon has used copies for about $15. I started reading it, and it's casual and funny and weird.
Then we broke into groups and looked up some info on one of the victims and three of the survivors. I was in a group with my friends Kim and Kara, and ours were Sandra Scheuer (victim), and Alan Canfora, Dean Kahler and Doug Wrentmore (survivors). We learned that Alan Canfora was one of the original members of the May 4 Task Force, and that Dean Kahler was paralyzed when he was shot. And Sandy's father survived the Holocaust! Wonder if his story's recorded somewhere.
Wednesday, we're watching a multimedia presentation Dr. Barbato made called Time It Was. I've seen part of it before, and it's pretty good. I'll talk about it then!
