Stories have always had that ability... video games are just another form of media through which we can tell stories. As much as I have loved these stories and felt much the same as you have (poor Aeris...) I can't help but feel it's a terrible world when the emotions and passions that come from real love and sacrifice and adventure are only available to us through stories... so we buy these things, so that we can BE those characters (subconciously or not) so that we can live those lives, lives where people fight for what they believe in and know that all they need to save the world is their friends and a little hope.

The problem is, there is a world out there that's in many ways in a much more terrible danger, from a much more formidable and evil foe, than any of the evils in those stories. There is a fight going on, a world that needs help, and adventure to be had... meanwhile, we sit and let that world die at the hands of entities much like Shinra, while we buy our lives from those same entities, and waste more of that time... which is running out.
