Summary: Gillian Scott is a veteran NYPD homicide detective in Manhattan, dedicated to the point of obsession and unwavering in her devotion to justice. She is adept at picking locks, willing to bend rules where necessary to the extent it won’t hinder prosecution. Gillian’s support system include her devoted husband and loving son, as well as her boss, her colleague and best friend, and mentee. Bernadette “Detta” Cooke is a sociopathic socialite, Manhattan-born, with little to no regard for human life. Desiring to pay it forward, she mentors a budding young sociopath in his own right. She trains him in the art of the connectionless kill and leaving minimal evidence. Despite having peripherally related interests, and their paths crossing constantly, the two women remain blissfully unaware of each other until Detta’s mentee has his sights set on Gillian’s son.

Bernadette Cooke

Gillian is warm and inquisitive but not enamored with social conventions. She's a loving wife, mother, friend, and mentor. She's also a dedicated and obsessive homicide detective. She's adept at lock picking and very aware of the laws and rules to be careful to toe the line but never cross it. She's a New Yorker through and through and has her master's in criminal justice. Gillian knew from a very early age that she wanted to be a cop. Her zeal to become law enforcement baffled her parents and, at every turn, she failed to make decisions they wanted her to make. This has led to a strained relationship with her parents. Her marriage is going strong at just over thirty years and her relationship with her son is close and supportive.
Bernadette, better known as Detta and occasionally known as "Cookie," is a cold and calculating Dark Miss Manners. She believes that she was meant to be a mentor to poor unfortunates who need help honing their craft. She has an intimate, obsessive relationship with 22-year-old Owen, who she met when she was volunteering in a juvenile group home years prior. Detta is a trust fund brat who has never had to work a day in her life. She is also a lover of art and literature. She doesn't have much of a relationship with her parents; growing up she'd never felt the need to have their love or approval, so she never bonded with them or liked them. She is cool and collected until she's contradicted, challenged, or angry, at which point she can get violent.
Brian Scott
Nick Robinson
Owen Murphy
Alden Ehrenreich
Brian is in between his junior and senior year of college at NYU, his mother's alma mater. He's dual majoring in English and Business. He looks like his father but his personality is much more closely aligned with Gillian, with whom he's very close. When he was a kid, he spent a lot of time hanging out with her at the police station where she worked. Because Gillian was busy a lot, she was never a smother mother, which helped ensure their relationship never went through that strained teenager-parent stage.
Owen never met his father and his drug-addicted mother foisted him off on the state when he was young after nearly breaking another kid's arm at a birthday party. Angry, frustrated, and directionless, he was the perfect target for Detta's tutelage. He lives and breathes for Detta, desperate to please her because she was the first person to give him positive attention. Despite Detta's guidance, Owen's killing style is still emotional and sloppy which is a constant source of frustration for his mentor.
