It takes a lot to shock or surprise me. People jumping out at me, sudden scenes of violence or gore, even loud noises rarely faze me. But, alas, I have two phobias of some consequence. One is a fear of heights which rarely comes up. It only triggers when I'm in a high place where there is a clear illusion that I might fall. Standing at the top of a New York skyscraper isn't a problem; only leaning over will cause my heart to pound. The other one is spiders.
I'm usually pretty good with those bastards too. If they're at rest, I can get pretty close without getting skittish. If they're moving, as long as they're not coming towards me it's all good. But today was a problem. Today, I had a baddie with a thumbnail sized body taking the grand tour of my room. What was I to do? I couldn't squish it. That's awfully close to touching it, and messy spider goo is also no good. And I couldn't let it get lost in my room, possibly wandering into my clothing or bedspread. It seemed unlikely that I could lure it out. So I had to hold a piece of paper up to it, let it crawl on, and risk life and limb as I ferried it across the four or five feet to my door (I was definitely not going to get it all the way outside, the most I could hope for was to make it to the door). On the second try, I had success. That was one of my accomplishments for today.
Going backwards, the second accomplishment of today involves signing up for the school show's audition. I'm almost guaranteed a role this quarter: even if I don't make it into the main show, one of the graduate-directed plays apparently has a cast of thousands. Our main production is Sam Shepard's Buried Child. The graduate-directed plays are Thornton Wilder's The Skin of Our Teeth and Euripides's Medea (cast of thousands). Check out the wikipedia articles for plot synopsis-goodness, if you feel so inclined.
My first accomplishment was finding a place open early enough to find breakfast. For those of you who are planning on coming to USCD (Jessica....), you will find yourself virtually residing at Perks Cafe. It's atmospheric, it opens at 7, it takes the dining plan card, and every 11th drink you get for free. Heaven.
...well, now that my heart has stopped pounding (spider adventure), I'm going to sleep.
