4.0 (or: Why I Hate Wizards of the Coast)

Aug 22, 2007 15:46

So apparently D&D version 4.0 was recently announced, and you know what? I don't care. I don't care if they've streamlined all the rules so that you don't have to memorize 350-page rulebooks to play. I don't care if they've made each basic class 30 levels long, and are simplifying the rules so that combat above 15th level doesn't get boggled down to the tune of each round taking 10 or 15 minutes to resolve. I don't care if they're creating online toolsets to make life easier for DMs and players alike. I just don't give a damn.

Why? Because damned if I haven't spent over $400 since 2003 buying 3rd edition D&D books, all of which will become obsolete if I transition over to 4.0. Sure, maybe the rules are needlessly complex, but you know what? I've spent the last 5 years memorizing those rules and I'm not going to discard all of that now. Maybe new, hip players will make the transition to this new system, but if that's the case I'm perfectly willing to be 'old school' and stick with the system I know, the system I have, and the system that has always worked for me.

Look at wizards.com for the link to youtube clips of the rather lukewarm reception of this announcement at somethingorothercon.
