Learning To Love You More
Advice to Sarah Friend age fourteen.
1. Right now you're thinking about buying a lot of black clothing, probably only buying black clothing, but stop right now. It's making you look like an idiot and you'll be wearing full colour again in two years anyway.
2. Tell your parents you love them more often. I know they piss you off right now and will for some time yet, but they love you far more than the unreliable, drug-abusing friends you're about to make. Not to mention in a few years they're going to pay for your education.
3. Use condoms. You're not going to get any STD's, don't worry, but somehow that thin layer of latex will make you feel a lot less used. Speaking of which, get used to feeling used. It's going to happen to you a lot.
4. You don't have an actual relationship until the Summer of grade twelve, so stop setting yourself up for disappointment.
5. Eat something. You're too skinny and you look sick. Trust me, you are many, many cheeseburgers away from being even close to fat.
6. Get your driver's license as soon as possible. You will come to regret every month you procrastinated, and buying a car will be one of the best things you ever do.
7. Don't drink so much, you are going to learn this many times over the hard way.
8. Despite what you will at many points think and loudly proclaim, you are going to graduate on time and get into the University of your choice. Education is not the enemy. The sooner you realize that, the better.
9. And lastly, knowing you, you won't listen to any of this, but just believe me that you turn out okay in the end. Honest.
