I'm just pondering the difference between LJ and Facebook. Social media, the universe and all that jazz. (It's 'cause it's getting late and my lamotrigine is wearing off)
I like LJ so much more. Facebook irritates me. You get a sprawling mess of a front page and if you make a series of comments only a few are shown at a time and not in sequence. If I want to say something (and someone cares enough to read it) I want them to at least have the option to read what I put. Considering that most people only write passing snippets and share photos there is not a lot really to read on facebook (not that what I have to say is particularly earth shattering). But a lot of it is a bit pointless....
....which leads me to Twitter. Why? The things people tweet are ridiculous. I have heard tell of posts such as "I had toast this morning" and (the possible urban myth) of the person who made a tweet every time he visited the toilet. I joined Twitter of a pretty odd reason - History Magazine mentioned a Jack the Ripper feed that would have historical figures tweeting interesting information. I was disappointed. I got the odd tweet from 19th century prostitutes complaining about the weather (oh, and there might be a serial killer at large). In fact I got more tweets from fictitious ladies of the night than Ed Byrne. When someone does tweet something it's often with little thought......
....which leads me to social media in general. The reason I normally stay away from it is I can’t keep my mouth shut....just like everyone else. I write things at the spur of the moment and then instantly regret what I’ve put when I calm down. Here is one of the biggies that make me crazy: I read what people have written and interpret wording with inflections that aren’t there - so I take offense where none is meant. (Or maybe I’m right and they are all out to get me!) I’m a grown woman and I make these rookie mistakes of writing first, thinking later. I think Teens probably have it the worst - they certainly learn the hard way that just ‘cause you deleted it don’t mean it’s gone.
*sigh* I’m such an anti-social luddite.
(NB- According to BBC History Magazine the Luddites are an often overrated activist group. They never did much damage in the greater scheme of things because the government came down of them in a disproportionately hard way. Part of the reason they didn’t get a huge amount of support from other working people is that they had lost their professions to the Industrial Revolution long before the weavers had a problem and the weavers did bugger all to help them out.)
