Heh, if mine hadn't had spontaneous resurrection I was going to try it, it couldn't have got worse so nothing to lose...I was almost disappointed it decided to work, but not quite as it had a lot of stuff I needed on it.
There is logic in how it's supposed to work, but also in the "it'll kill it more" camp.

I actually got around to buying a second drive which was as close to identical as possible. Supposedly it's possible that transferring the platters across can work if they're from the same run and you're very lucky(although not likely from what I read).

The problem, in Sarah's case, is that the drive appears fine but her computer has stopped being able to get into Windows with it fitted. Safe mode worked originally then stopped.
We've run some pretty heavy duty scanning software (24hrs worth of analysis, tests everything) and it came up fine; Windows chkdsk and it comes up fine, in safe mode it could read all the data too.

This new drive was a joke; I've bought things on ebay for years and never had something decent packaged so badly (all the others the guy sold at the same time have left positive feedback saying how well it's worked etc; so I don't think he's bad, just dumb as a post).

We're not pleased with the post office either, it was a special delivery package and it was signed for by someone(no idea who, it wasn't either of us), and shoved through our letterbox.
