When the Southern hip hop group B-Rock & The Bizz released the dance record "MyBabyDaddy" in 1997, that slang term for unaffiliated parenthood - already in wide, underground use - was disseminated further and made legitimate. Sampling the Emotion's ebullient "Best of My Love" as the rhythm track produced a new, unexpected, classic expression of hip hop era romance. The country inflection of the song's chorus ("Who dat is?" "Dat's jus' MyBabyDaddy!") felt unselfconscious. The title was enunciated quickly as though in the course of everyday male-female bickering. Recognizing a well-known community problem, the song also comically portrayed the situation of young men and women going through assorted casual relationships. Their biological and sociological consequences were taken in-stride, accepted as a part of life.
