Growing Up

“I am not young enough to know everything.” - Oscar Wilde

“Growing up my dear,

Is foreign grown up words,

And long grocery lists in distant languages,

As your mother shouts to get three oranges not two,

And only get two apples not three.”

“Growing up my darling,

Is wishing wells,

You wish for your wish to come true,

And for a million more wishes,

And then for a million more.”

“Growing up sweetie pie,

Is birthday parties,

The smell of cake and ice cream,

Tug-o-war, and water balloons,

And blowing out the candles wishing for just one more wish.”

“Growing up love,

Is tying your shoe laces,

And giving up

And telling your mom to buy

The Velcro ones instead.”

“Growing up honey,

Is kick ball games,

And the sensation of sliding home,

And scoring a point,

And sticking your tongue out at the big fourth grade team.”

“Growing up pumpkin,

Is trick-or-treating,

Door to door, for chocolate and gummies,

And eating it all in one night,

And getting a mouthful of cavities for your dentist.”

“Growing up sugar,

Is broken vases,

And blaming your little brother for it,

Who’s sitting in the corner sucking his thumb,

And tugging his blue blankie around.”

“Growing up cutie,

Is being grown up,

And answering the telephone,

And taking notes at the dinner table,

And laughing at grown up jokes.”

Being grown up,

Honey bunches of oats,

Honey-cakes,

My love,

Sweetie,

Is remembering saying…

“I don wantu gwow up.”

I don’t want to grow up.

I don’t want to be old.

And I won’t,

Not until you give me,

A reason.
