After 8 moderately stressful weeks and no leftover brainspace, I have just turned in the formal software design document for the project I am currently working on. At 107 A4 pages it's the longest thing I've ever written: half again as long as the honours thesis that took me 6 months (6 years ago, now *eek*).

On Friday, I get 2 hours to have it all peer-reviewed so I can start work. It has to be approved not only by the members of my team who will be working on it, but also by the people developing the bits it connects to; the people deciding on the architecture of the main product that it's an add-on to; the people who developed the last one (to make sure we've got backwards compatibility happening) and the product managers. Once it gets past the review, I spend the next 3 months coding and testing it, for an absolute deadline of just before Christmas. By this time next year it will be running in several thousand locations around the world.

I'm exhausted just thinking about it. One mega-document is going to have to be enough for today.

work, my life, geek stuff
