I'm getting my act together and finally taking steps to get my UK driver's license. I've had a recommendation of a good private instructor, so I called him and left him a message. He got back to me and I told him a little bit about my situation (that I know how to drive, learned to drive on a manual, held a California license for a number of years before letting it expire). He started making comments about Americans not knowing how to drive manuals, even if they think they do! I've driven a manual in San Francisco, for goodness' sake. Starting from a dead stop on those hills, which are some of the steepest in the world, seems to me to be an indication that I do actually know how to do it. It totally annoys me when people come out with these ridiculous "all Americans are like X" statements without the facts. Grrr. Hopefully I will still remember enough to make him eat his words on our first lesson. I haven't driven in a few years, but I drove my parents' SUV a few years back after not driving for a while and it was fine. Like falling off a bike.
