PENSACOLA, Fla. (AP) - Searchers looking for a missing Pensacola couple in the Gulf of Mexico found a woman’s body Tuesday offshore from Pensacola Beach, but it was not immediately identified.
A recreational diver unconnected with the search also found the pair’s 21-foot boat on the gulf bottom in 90 feet of water about 10 miles south of Pensacola, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officials said in a news release.
The Conservation Commission, Coast Guard and Escambia County Sheriff’s Office were searching for Steve Garst, 27, and his fiance, Lori Ullery, 20.
They were reported missing by Garst’s father when they failed to return as planned Monday night from a fishing trip to the site of the sunken freighter San Pablo, a popular diving and fishing spot, authorities said.
Conservation Commission officers turned the body over to the district medical examiner’s office in Pensacola for positive identification and an autopsy as the air and sea search continued.
A dive team will be sent to examine Garst’s boat Wednesday if the weather permits, said Conservation Commission Capt. Brad Williams.
