Food always seems to be sold in pairs here:
bananas and groundnuts (peanuts)
pieces of coconut and corn
pineapple and oranges
The oranges are awesome! They peel most of the rind away then cut off a bit of the top so you can just squeeze the juice into your mouth mess free. Good for commuting. Pineapple is sliced and put in little baggies for you. The groundnuts already come in baggies. The corn is freshly roasted or boiled. And the coconuts.... oh the coconuts. These guys with wagons FULL of coconuts will cut the top off for you so you can drink the juice. As soon as you finish, you hand it back to them and they cut it open so you can get to the meat (you pick, soft or hard). Goodness is is so good. And it's only 2,500 cedis, which is like 30 cents. A bit less. *cheeky grin*
Food here is also very strachy and spicy! Ooooooh wee do we eat rice a lot.
There's also the ever famous banku and okra strew. Banku is fermented corn dough in a big gooey lump that you dip into your okra stew, which usually has crab, fish and cow's skin in it (though you can opt to have different ingredients if you want). This costs about 15,000 cedis, or a buck fifty. Ish.
OH! And they have plantain chips here... yum.
My daily walk to class takes anywhere from 15 minutes to 45 minutes (like this morning... and that class is at 7:30, so I have to leave my house at 6:45 a.m..... gah) depending where on campus it is. This is a HUGE campus. But I like it.
Bah... I feel as if everytime I sit down to the computer all the "deep thoughts" run away and I just write about mundane things.
Life is starting to feel like life here. Oh, and power is out again. : ) Another night of singing I guess!
This weekend we're going to Cape Coast to do allll the fun stuff behind the cut.
Enjoy.
From our director, Kwasi:
On Saturday when we depart Legon, one bus(the one i will travel on) will go to the Elmina castle, while the one Jane and Abena will travel on will go to the Cape Coast castle. I must say that the tour of the slave castles can be a heavy experience for most of you and therefore I would like evevryone to exhibit a high sense of decorum on the tour. The tour will be a guided one and we are free to ask our guide questions when something is not clear to us.
After the tour of the castles we will have lunch at the hotel we will be staying the night at. The hotel is called Sanaa Lodge. After lunch we are free to explore Cape coast as much as we can till we meet again in the evening at 7pm for dinner, also at the hotel.
On Sunday morning, breakfast will be at 7am and then at 8am we depart the hotel, to Kakum park, one of the beautiful rain forest reserves that we have in the world. Please note that we will not return to the hotel so ensure that you bring along all your belongings from the hotel room on sunday morning. At Kakum we will do a hike before we get to walk on the canopy-walkway. This is a great experience and i encourage all, even those who fear heights, to do the walk, it is really uplifting.
From Kakum we will take lunch at Hans Cottage, a restaurant with a crocodile pond where we will get to see some crocodiles. The last time i went, they were working on the pond, i hope it is fully completed by now. if it is we definitely will see some of the crocodiles.
That's it for now.
Ghana is teaching me patience. I love it.
