Memorial Day

May 29, 2005 23:10

My eternal gratitude to those who have given the ultimate sacrifice in the service of their country.
My thanks and gratitude to those who currently serve or have ever served.

After I left active duty, I had a job interview in Washington, D.C. While I was there, I walked the gardens of stone at Arlington National Cemetery, I watched the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknowns, I saw the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, I saw the Marine Corps War Memorial. I saw all this and more. As a veteran, these hold tremendous significance for me, much moreso than if I had not served. Prior service or not, I wish everyone could see these and understand their significance, understand what it means to live a life of service. I need to be reminded of that sometimes, too.

Like most people who possess even the least bit of compassion, I hope for an end to all wars. Until that day comes, I take comfort and pride in knowing that every day and night, at every hour, no matter what the circumstances, there are Marines on duty. And my love and gratitude go out to them all.

To all veterans of all branches, no matter when or where you served, no matter what you did, and regardless of your particular branch of service, thank you from a grateful Marine.
